The Elder Scrolls Forums _ Elder Scrolls Lore _ RP: Playing Houses

Posted by: Loranna Oct 26 2005, 01:24 AM

Hello, and welcome to our Elder Scrolls Role Playing threads, where we adventure and socialize in the vibrant land of Tamriel.

Before we begin, we'd like to clarify a few things:

===

Newcomers, we ask you to
http://www.elderscrolls.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=141737&view=findpost&p=2871855 before starting up; everyone will be happier for it smile.gifAlso, read http://www.elderscrolls.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=141737 as soon as possible; this will give you an idea of who is in the RP.

To help you get up to speed, here is http://www.tc.umn.edu/~rhod0091/lrp/temp.html told from my character Loranna's perspective. This summary doesn't cover everything but it sums up some of the bigger events our campaign has covered. Note: I will probably update and edit this summary as time goes on.

===

This is an 'open roleplay' and everyone is encouraged to join in at any time!

'Open' roleplay does not mean 'unorganized' or 'limitless', however. The events in this story are usually planned, and if something BIG happens, you can be certain that it is the result of much discussion between players, usually in the mIRC chat (#Loranna_RP, Chatspike server). This is not just a bunch of disorganized individuals doing what they think would be fun for their character at the time.

So, while everyone is welcome to join in, they are NOT welcome to jump in and do big, world-changing things without DISCUSSING IT FIRST. Let me be very clear about what cannot be done without permission:

1:
Any action that effects another person's character, for ill or good. Although most people realize they can't harm another person's character without permission, many don't realize that you can't HELP another character without permission, either. Many characters have flaws for a reason. Don't go healing, saving, or otherwise fixing another character without DISCUSSING IT FIRST with the player involved.

2:
Any event that would drastically change things that have been done to the world, whether the change is physical (rebuilding destroyed locations), political (converting a population to a new cause), military (killing off all the badguys) or anything else. Almost every situation, good or bad, that exists in the RP was done for some reason. Don't go changing or fixing things without DISCUSSING IT FIRST with the group.

Everyone who is involved in the RP is welcome in the mIRC chat channel #Loranna_RP, on the Chatspike server. If you have a plot idea then you are encouraged to go there and discuss it. If you cannot get on the channel for some reason, or if the player whos character you would affect with your plan is not there, then PM them using this board's PM function. That's what it's there for.

If you do not have MIRC, you can http://www.chatspike.net/?p=javairc. Enter in a nickname where prompted and hit Submit. You'll be asked if you want to trust the signed applet. Hit Yes, and you'll be in the main chatspike channel. From there, type /join #Loranna_RP

You'll enter our chat channel and we can talk to you.

Not following the above advice will only result in one thing: your post is likely to be completely ignored by everyone as if it did not happen. This is obvously not good for anyone, so please, discuss major events before doing them.

Remember: Secret plans and surprises are seldom fun for anyone else. Before they're revealed they're boring, because nobody knows about them, and afterwards they're just annoying, because nobody knew about them.
Thank you, and have fun!

IMPORTANT: WE HAVE JUMPED SIX MONTHS INTO THE FUTURE; IT IS NOW RAIN'S HAND IN THE RP (i.e., April)

Summary for Loranna: Loranna has spoken with Dragon and Kethiah about measures to protect the children and citizens of Ald Raathim, learned of the identity of the Butcher of the Bay from Goranthir, was catching up with Tris who she has not seen in many months, and most recently is speaking with the Khajiit Alas and Alack in the Nymph and Noggin, finding herself taken by their bleeding charm.

ooc. Maranda is sitting around Ald Raatham, doing nothing in paticular... (do feel free to aproch her or somthing tongue.gif) An evil Lich, on the other hand, is preparing for visitors

Posted by: Allerleirauh Oct 26 2005, 01:26 AM

ooc summaries:

Allerleirauh is with Goranthir in an upstairs room at the Nymph, after discussing Helseth's suggestion that Goranthir go undercover in Vvardenfell to discover who is impersonating ALMSIVI.

Dragon made a brief stop in Hla Oad, but he's in his offices now.

Tris Gaerington is... well.

QUOTE(S'reddit @ Oct 26 2005, 01:06 AM)

Alas smiled.  He had beautiful teeth.  "Well, if it's privacy your after, Tris Gaerington of Wayrest, we could always --"

"Nuh uh," Alack interrupted him.

"Not enough flirty flirty yet?" Alas sighed. "I never know."

QUOTE(Loranna @ Oct 26 2005, 01:07 AM)

Loranna holds out her hand.  "Dres Loranna Pyrel of Ald Raathim," she says.  "A pleasure."

QUOTE(S'reddit @ Oct 26 2005, 01:08 AM)

The two Khajiit looked at her, and then one another.

"Naw," said Alack, his smile uncertain. "You're havin' us on ..."

"Please tell us you're havin' us on," added Alas more seriously.

*

"Doesn't take much flirty, really," Tris said. "And there's the House of Dibella in town, if you can't be bothered flirting. Her Ladyship of Daruhn isn't having you on at all. I am, a little... you see I've only told you half my name. But it seemed fair, since you've only told us half yours, if that."

He smiled.

Summary

Goranthir, Prince of Firsthold, is in his room at the Nymph and Noggin. Allerleirauh is with him, having discussed with him the idea of him going undercover to discover what is behind the false Tribunal sightings in Vvardenfell. What's odd is that he's only just gotten the assignment, but she's already debriefing him.

Kethiah is meeting upstairs with Ya’Tirrje, a.k.a. Goldcat, a notorious smuggler, and the Spymaster's best informant.

Goldcat's two sidekicks, Alas and Alack, are flirting in the bar with Tris and Loranna. They've just been given the unpleasant news that the "lassie" is the Lady of Ald Raathim.

"Tris speaks the truth," Loranna says, offering the two Khajiit a smile of her own. "Though you've offered us very charming names, and anyone who tells this man here how he really looks in candlelight can't be all bad."

She winks, then adds to Tris "Though you'll always look handsome in any light to your friends, hun."

Alack stumbled to his feet. Alas tried as well, and fell over in his chair.

"We meant no disrespect to you, my Lady," Alack said nervously. "Or you either, my good ... lord ..."

Goldcat and Kethiah stepped down the stairs. Ya’Tirrje smiled as she looked at her boys.

Summary: Shaka, Telera and Anya are hunting the Skull of Corruption held by the lich Manavrio, and are fighting through an escalating series of monsters.

Shaka studied the three doors standing before them. They could also try continuing down the passage, but he was tired of stealth and battling skeletal minions . . . .

"Right up the middle. Let's try the center door," he said.

"Tomcats, always leaving their mark," Goldcat grinned. "I don't know what you boys have been up to, but I'm sure the diplomatic consequences are something I'll live with for years."

As our three intrepid adventurers open the centre door, what do they find? Find out, NOW

As the three of them pushed open the door, they saw a room, an altar on the far side, and four skeleton warriors standing in a row. A Dark Robed figure was sitting at an alchemy table and it was he who spoke, 'Greetings, Shaka, Telera, or should I say Teleran? And Anya, is it? I am quite surprised you managed to get this far so fast. I was at least wanting you to encounter more of my wonderful surprises I keep within my castle' the Dark Robed figure turned from the table, his face darkened by the shadow of the hood, the skeletons moved to attack, but the robed man raised his hand to stop them, 'I am Manavrio, and you have intruded within my castle to retrieve the skull of corruption, have you not?' A gloved hand could be seen, the skull within its grasp, 'Tell me, why are you here, oh, I know the Dibellians sent you, but why did you do thier bidding, young shaka?'

She winks, to show she's joking.

"It's been a long time since I was called that," said the battlemage. Despite his flippant words, Shaka was a little taken aback by how much the lich knew.

"I don't usually serve the Dibellans . . . . and I don't even care that much who owns the Skull. But I want to change my nature. Get out of this cage of scales."

"That's good, I'm no good at diplomacy," Ya’Tirrje gave Loranna a half-smile. "I always surrender. Until we meet again, my Lady ... Good luck."

The Goldcat led the two Khajiit out the front door of the Nymph. Both Alas and Alack looked over their shoulders, for one last look at Loranna and Tris, and to mouth the words "Sorry."

"What a den of iniquity I own," Kethiah sighed.

"Supposedly it's been done before . . . Turning ugliness into beauty. My true self is Ra'Gada, and if I succeed in this quest for the House, they might be able to bring that out." The words sounded inane even as he said them.

On impulse, he said: "Manavrio, I think I understand a little of how you became . . . this. You probably wanted to understand the world, as I do. You sought power; though there's where we differ, because I never wanted that much of it."

"But the day came when you realized that all your years of study would come to nothing; rotting flesh in the grave. So you grasped for a kind of immortality. To become undead, but the puppet master, not the puppet. Am I getting warm?"

Shaka was stunned into silence. Was that what he was? Vain?

And he might not have to fight any more today, to win the prize. He glanced at his loves, silent and pale themselves.

Yet still they stood at his side.

It was one of the harder decisions he had had to make, and a snap decision at that. He didn't even know if the Dibellans could come through for him. And the lich before him radiated power, he might well be telling the truth.

"Good fruit can't come from a poisoned tree. . . . . You chose an unnatural path, Manavrio. The world doesn't owe me anything, except a death."

"I was refering to us in the general sense," Loranna mutters. "... You and Goranthir know what he's got and Goranthir's ship is the best one we have ..."

I want to see this dealt with too, Loranna thinks, her thoughts plain, but ...

"We should let the others know, and let those who wish to go volunteer," she says. "Isidor's already said he intended to go; Dragon said he was going to talk to Falco's father, who knows what he might wish ..."

Telera seethed, “Shaka, how dare you compare yourself to this thing. It’s worse than calling yourself an animal. It. Is. Not. Like. You. In any way.

"You can’t seriously consider going along with anything this thing suggests? Just look at where this thing makes its home! It’s not right, it’s not smart, it’s vile, it’s, it’s…”

She ended, “It’s a bleeding lich and it kills little puppies!”

‘I wish the lich could be bleeding,’ the dagger added its two cents.

Tris was already starting up the stairs. "You wish, Lady of Daruhn," he said, with a grin.

QUOTE(syronj @ Oct 26 2005, 06:05 PM)

"I choose life in the end.  Even if it's a scaled parody of human."

*

QUOTE(Teleran @ Oct 26 2005, 06:10 PM)

Telera seethed, “Shaka, how dare you compare yourself to this thing. It’s worse than calling yourself an animal. It. Is. Not. Like. You. In any way.

"You can’t seriously consider going along with anything this thing suggests? Just look at where this thing makes its home! It’s not right, it’s not smart, it’s vile, it’s, it’s…”

She ended, “It’s a bleeding lich and it kills little puppies!”

‘I wish the lich could be bleeding,’ the dagger added its two cents.

'(sigh) Did you ever wonder how I knew you were coming? Did you ever realise how easy it was to get here? Did you not think that if you turned down my generous offer I would not have something to face you with?' His hand passed over the skull, and three exact duplicates, from clothes to weapons stood before our three heroes, duplicates that moved to attack, 'NO, not yet!' the duplicates backed off, 'if it is death you want, then death you shall receive, but I shall ask you once more. I have prepared this potion for you. Its a polymorph potion that will turn you into a redguard,' he gestured to the potion, 'permanent, and beside it is the cure, it will turn you back into your other self.

'These potions, however, only have one serve... I am giving you this as a gift, a payment that you will leave me be. I do not want to fight, and I am not asking you to go get yourself killed for a simple polymorph, like the temple of Dibella, I am offering you a solution to your problem. If you wish to throw your life away with these idiotic assumptions of "good" and "evil" so be it, just remember, with your last breath on this cold floor that you had your chance and you threw it away. This is your final chance, or, as you said, would you rather have what life owes you?'

"From now on, call me Lasher of Kitties," Loranna says, giving Tris a playfully imperious look. "And you will have to earn the right to watch."

She laughs, but something weighs on her mind:

She didn't get it; the scar didn't detract from his looks that much ...

As the lich probably knew he would, Shaka felt a growing anger and confusion. He looked at his mirror image and was disgusted; the pettiness, the self-centeredness. Truly this was some evil duplicate - - and then it hit him. Not a reversed image. An exact one.

Goranthir and Allerleirauh were not, actually in flagrante delicto when Tris entered the room. They had finished three minutes and six seconds before. Allie's head was on his chest, and he was running his fingers through her silver hair. Goran had been asking her about Dragon, and why he was the way he was, and if it was possible he was happy.

Tris's sudden appearances almost didn't give Goranthir a shock anymore. Almost.

After he recovered, he said, "Is it my birthday again already?"

ooc: Isidor, male nord, is in the Nymph and Noggin, reeling from the news that Falco is a homicidal maniac. Oh, he's also thinking about the war, marriage, etc ...

Tyradil and Tilitalia, Isidor's children, are in school.

Tsei is in Ald Raathim, walking.

Diamond couldn't believe the treacheries of Falco.

- and here he was, trying to burn down the Kynareth figure...

The party at Moonguard had departed at last for Ald Raathim. They would likely arrive in the night.

Summary:

Nalion

Nalion, a male Breton mage currently stays in his home town of Lainlyn near Shornhelm in the High Rock province. Though he is still busy sorting out his own affairs there, some of which dating back 15 years, his thoughts more and more turn to a prospering city on the Morrowind Mainland and the friends he has left there. Once more, he feels that he stayed in one place for too long.

Gistral

Gistral, a Redguard warrior often acting as guide for caravans was last seen traveling across the Alik'r desert in Hammerfell. Envious - and less successful scouts - reported seeing him building sandcastles. The credibility of these people seems to be rather ... lacking, though.

Shaka cursed himself as the three took out the skeleton warriors. Their duplicates seemed content to watch them fight these minions first.

Why did I talk to Manavrio instead of attacking immediately, thought Shaka. Stupid, as stupid as asking questions of a Daedroth. Now the lich had disappeared with the Skull . . . .

As he decapitated one of the skeletons with the Spear of Bitter Mercy, Shaka realized with a chill that his duplicate would be the greatest opponent of his life. The battlemage had fought stronger foes before, or smarter, or more cunning. But this other Shaka knew all his tricks and would be able to counter them unthinkingly. Anya and Telera would find the same of their doppelgangers . . . .

The bartender handed the Khajiit his drink, and quoted a couple different prices, as there were a handful of rooms available, from small, simple rooms over the Noggin ("though they're a bit loud"), to respectable rooms in the Nymph, to one multi-room apartment which was generally held for VIPs, though it was currently available ... and extremely expensive ...

Pays for one of the cheaper respectable rooms. Drinks up and goes to leave his stuff in his room. He then goes out to have a look around the town and do some general nosing about.

"I wish,"  Tris said, setting one knee on the bed and leaning forward, to press against both of them at once. It struck him that Goranthir was visibly older, his muscles denser, than he had been even the last time Tris had seen him without clothes.

"Kethiah received a report about Falco. He's in Hla Oad. We can catch him, if we hurry."

"You can use my ship," said Goranthir, looking at Allie and then Tris. "But I need to go somewhere else ..."

He told Tris about the assignment in Vvardenfell.

Eats-With-Claws dropped his drink, the glass shattered on the floor. But he didn't care. He just stared in shock at his commanding officer. The claws from wich he gained his namesake were clenched so tightly that blood flowed from his palms.

Then, in a voice so quivering and seething with anger and hatred that it sounded as though he was attempting to hold back the urge to brake something over someone's head (Which he was), "Sir, Permission to take a leave of absence and carve my son into tiny little pieces?"

Shaka held the Spear to his forehead in salute for a moment; his doppleganger did the same, after a brief hesitation. Then the flurry of blows and counters began.

Shaka found himself in the state of no-thought that might help him survive. There was no time to plan, only strike and react. His double alternated between thrusts of the Spear of Bitter Mercy, and attempting to catch Shaka's Spear in its flanges. Shaka's tactics were the same.

The Dragonbone Cuirass each wore was as strong as any daedric armor, but the Spear would prove stronger if it could land a solid thrust. Shaka turned to the side just in time as his double's Spear gouged a path along the cuirass' ribs. Shaka attempted a decapitating swipe of the broad spearhead, and was unsurprised when his doppelganger not only ducked in time but lashed out with a kick.

Shaka was hurled back for a moment, and swore as his opponent activated his copy of the Amulet of Shadows. He was soon only a faint wavering in the dim light of Manavrio's lair. Shaka immediately activated his own Amulet.

Now a deadly game of cat-and-mouse ensued as each warrior maneuvered as quietly as possible. Shaka could smell his opponent, but not precisely enough for a good target; his ears would have to strain as best they could.

On an impulse, he hurled the Spear . . . but not at his double. Shaka attempted to skewer Telera's double.

"As it happens," Dragon said, "I disagree. On both points, that Falco is black all through, and that it's a father's place to kill his son when he can't be redeemed.

"As to the first, I have spoken with Falco face-to-face, so I know that he is fighting for Redoran and Indoril because of his principles, because he believes the House system is less oppressive than the Monarchy. I hold that Falco is mistaken, but that doesn't alter the point: one who is still capable of taking up arms for what he believes is right has not yet been entirely consumed by darkness.

A time may come when an honorable father must stand aside and let his son be killed; there is no excuse for performing the killing himself unless there is no other possible hand that can be raised."

Anya frowned, her clone sneering. She found this twisted parody distasteful.

She raised her spear, but in a defensive pose, waiting rather than charger. Her clone waved her hand and faded from view. Anya menatlly smacked herself for not thinking about that sooner. Her footsteps were too light to track through the racket of the other fights.

She thought about going invisible herself. Instead she pulled out several silver stars. She threw them in even patterns, the Poisonbloom enchantments activating.

Anya's doppleganger shimmered into view, though not near Anya like she thought. She was farther off, bow raised and aimed at her head. Reacting quickly, she cast a jump spell, and launched ehrself straight at the clone, spear readied. A flurry of attacks ensued as each sought to break threw with their spears.

Anya brought her spear down in a way that forced the clone to block it so that the spears became locked. Using this, she cast jump again, and raised her legs using the clone to launch herself at Shaka's clone.

Anya had one dagger readied with a Silence enchantment and her Dagger of Judgment in the other. Using the momentary confusion, she silenced the clone with her dagger to keep him from healing himself, and brought Judgment up to his throat.

The sails had been replaced, as had the crewmen slain. The supply of food, however was taking longer than normal to load onto the ship. This was due to the enormous amount of food he ordered. It would be a day or two before the merchants in town could get their stocks refilled.

Meanwhile, Falco was growing impatient and anxious. He didn't like to wait in one place too long, but for now he had no choice.

Goranthir came downstairs with Allerleirauh. "That's right, and I probably won't be here when you get back. My captain's excellent, though, and the crew are all hard-workers and hard-fighters. They won't let you down."

Dragon arrived at the tavern.

"I've spoken with Falco's father;  he's going with us. Kethiah, I think a toxin is a very good idea. May I suggest the two temples, and the new tower of the castle?"

Allerleirauh descended the stairs. She hadn't dressed, simply put on a robe.

Tris came in, not from upstairs, but through an outside door. "I have parrapton riders waiting at the docks. Everything's ready. Goranthir's not going."

*

Loranna nods to Dragon. "Those sound like good ideas," she says. "Thanks Kethiah."

She nods to Tris and Allie, and gives Goranthir a hug before she goes. "Take care dear; hope to see you again soon," she says, before heading to the ship.

Reichi, having heard of the actions of Falco, had arrived at the dock already. It was hard to think Falco, of all people, was the butcher of the bay. Mutilating bodies like that never seemed Falco's style, Reichi would have thought Falco, as a pirate, would have merely robbed the merchants blind and stabbed anyone who put up resistance, not kill everyone and make decorations out of their insides.

Of course, Reichi wouldn't have been nauseated by the sight of one of the butchered ships, he was all too used to waking up in a simlar pile of gore. Naked, bloodpattered. But still, Falco had to be stopped, he was butchering innocents and Ald Raathim's trade.

Isidor made his way down to the docks, after telling Tyradil and Tilitalia that he would be gone for a few days. They looked upset, but didn't say anything. He got on the boat, and lapsed into thought.

Kethiah held the children's hands as they walked down to the docks to see their father off.

Goranthir walked down as well, to make sure everything was all right with the captain and crew of the Akarvina. He also spoke to the parraptons. "They're ready."

The Nymph

Trason worked in the back quietly. Every noise startled him and he constantly found himself looking out the window. He was very paranoid during these times, as alot of people were during times of war. He had one hand on his meal and one on the hilt of his sword. He couldn't work under these conditions. He needed to be out there, making sure the battle didn't make it to Ald Raathim.

He would join the army.

The Akarvana was one of the fastest boats on the Inner Sea, and her crew able and skilled. The prow of the ship cut through the water like a slaughterfish homing in on its prey. On the deck, in addition to the heroes of Ald Raathim, a flight of parraptons stood, waiting for the order to take off and bring death to the Butcher from the skies.

Before the day was out, the tiny fishing village of Hla Oud was in sight - as was the Butcher's ship the Red Falcon ...

Falco was finally getting some sleep when he heard the loud, scratchy voice of his Bosmeri lookout yelling from outside his cabin, "Captain! The ship from before is near!"

The argonian shot up, dressed himself, and grabbed his saber. Falco looked to the West, and sure enough, that blasted ship was there. He began calling to the few crewmen still getting supplies in town. "Port defensive maneuver 21! Let's give'em oblivion boys!"

It wasn't hard to figure out who "'em" was. The pirates set about their defensive plan, just like all the drills.

Telera’s double dodged the thrown spear lithely, catching the shaft as it flew past and turning its vicious tines towards Anya advancing smoothly, licking her lips, “I can’t wait to sink my teeth into you, gorgeous.”

“Only I get t-I mean, you don’t-ah, screw it. Kick her [censored] Anya!” Telera yelled from where she was fighting, two skeletons crumbling around her and a third being kicked back as Telera worked her way clear to help against the copies of herself and Anya.

She could vaguely make out the sound of her dagger talking in the background but it didn’t sound like it was talking to her. It was strange, hearing it and knowing it was talking to someone else. Maybe it had picked up talking to itself now, wouldn't surprise her. Whatever its reasons, it couldn’t mean anything good.

The area around Telera’s clone was enveloped in purple-white light one ring inside another spinning out through space. All magic in the area ceased to have effect. Anya was suddenly visible before she could launch her attack, and false-Telera took advantage of knowing where Anya was to turn into her, daggers flashing out to trap Anya’s away from her flesh. This close in she dropped the spear, not enough room to swing properly or make an effective jab. Sliding in under the daggers she stood within Anya’s arm, as if embraced, “Mmm, hello lovely.”

At this point Telera, had sent a dagger at right angles to them, “You stay away from her!” She forgot about looking for the other Anya as she charged forward to prevent her own copy from harming the real Anya.

Telera’s clone darted back away from Anya to avoid the dagger, cursing that she hadn’t managed to steal at least a nibble of Anya’s pretty flesh.

The Bound weapons were out of time anyway. Shaka stepped forward and wrapped his tail around the Telera double's neck, then spun in a circle, snapping her neck like a whip.

As the doppelganger dropped nervelessly, Shaka caught his Spear.

Before he moved to help Telera fight the last double, Shaka said to Anya: "I'm sorry that you had to see this today, elf. I love you."

Shaka couldn't imagine what it had been like for Anya to see what appeared to be her loved ones die violently, when she had already been through the real thing, and twice.

The clone of Anya had remained largely out of the fight, prefering to haress and let the others fight each other. She didn't feel the connection to her clone companions the real protaganists had. She was rather disappointed when they came out relatively unharmed.

Anya's doppleganger used the same suprise tactics that Anya employed. She began throwing dozens of Blind enchanted daggers. She cast a chameleon spell and hazed out of partial view. Compounded with Blind, she used her speed to rush foward, aiming at Telera's hamstrings.

Anya eeked out a small cry. She knew the look in the clone's eye.

Shaka's hands moved in a mudra that looked like turning a ball over. A small sphere like green lightning formed, and he hurled the Lover's Kiss in the direction of the doppleganger.

Waiting for its effect, Shaka slipped the healing bracelet Loranna had given him onto Telera's wrist. After the fight, he'd further heal Telera's legs.

Anya walked through the corpses, collecting her weapons, her eyes were wide and tilted in half confusion, half fear. As she wrenched the dagger with silence out of the back of Shaka's clone, she mumbled partially to herself partially out loud, "It- it could have been... no, no. It won't be you. Nothing will happen. Nothing can happen..."

She swung her spear, flicking the blood off and slung it along her back. She schooled her face, and helped Telera to her feet. She was scared of what she saw in her doppleganger. It was a face she held for a long time, and something she never fully recovered from.

"Shaka, does that say where to go? I don't want to be here any longer than needed."

With a touch, his cloak and breeches were the leather of a cliffracer, and his shirt appeared in the coarse cloth of the island.  "That's better, isn't it?  Though how I can get by without talking ..."

"The closer a lie is to the truth, the less likely you are to be caught out, I think," Allerleirauh said. "They can't be shunning everyone who's an outlander; all Indoril are outlanders, and the Indoril have taken refuge with Redoran now. Perhaps it's best to say you come from Mournhold. The Indoril used to have a powerful presence there until recently, the Imperial influence is strong, and you've spent time there. It's even a logical place for a devotee of the Tribunal to be from; one so offended by the suggestion that they might be dead that he wanted to leave the New Temple."

The Garden of the Nymph and Noggin

Every kid, Dunmer, Nord, Khajiit, between the ages of five and fifteen were in the garden of the Nymph and Noggin as Kethiah explained to them that they had to be brave and be prepared. She kept the lessons short this first time, demonstrating to them the alarm bell, and telling them that they must get somewhere safe when they heard it. She told them that a safe place may not be home, but be at a temple, the Mages Guild, or the castle.

The garden was a good place to teach some basic rules of concealment. She also took out a stuffed dummy she had used for practice and showed the kids where to hit it to give them enough time to get away.

Tomorrow she would teach them more exercises.

Goranthir pulled an old copy of the Pocketguide to the Empire from the shelf in his room, and read:

"Clan Indoril claims kinship with all three of the legendary Tribunes, which doubtless accounts for Indoril's preeminence among the five clans. Indoril's capital is Almalexia, also the capital of Morrowind itself, and the Tribunal priesthood (which is one and the same as the bureaucracy of civil government) is dominated by the Indoril and their subclans."

"The book needs updating," Goranthir said. "But that, sounds, like you say, like 'valor, brass polish, and obsessiveness' to me."

"Nice," said Herwyn Brand from the far side of the garden, as he watched Kethiah wave the last of the children, a rather rotund little Imperial boy, out of the gate.

"I think I learned a thing or two about how to deal with Bad Men," he added with a smile.

Although the last six months had filled the Spymaster's time with war-related, sometimes dangerous, work, he seemed to have thrived under such pressure. Well, there was something making him look healthy and happy, at least.

Herwyn threw his dark grey doublet over his shoulder, enjoying the warm spring weather, and bent to smell a tall yellow flower.

"Your garden is lovely. Much nicer, if you don't mind me saying, than your old one."

Rethan. Rethan was a Hlaalu name, there was a Rethan manor. Goranthir had probably heard the name from the many Hlaalu at Helseth's court. Nothing about this was going to be easy.

Kethiah stood and looked Herwyn in the eye. He could still see the scar above the now violet-colored eye from their last encounter. He could also see now why this assassin would not fight him this time. She was clearly pregnant.

"You have an advantage, I know why you came the last time, but I don't know why you didn't kill me," she said.

QUOTE(Xyber02 @ Oct 27 2005, 12:38 AM)

*

Shaka carried the book over to Anya and Telera. Before attempting to read it, he cast a healing white glow over Tel's hamstrings.

He studied Anya's face. Shaka would have to see if talking to her later would help with the trauma of this day, having to fight and kill the people closest to her . . . .

Before answering Anya, he turned to Telera. "You okay too, beautiful? We should probably try to get moving before Manavrio decides to send in reinforcements . . . ."

The Dibellans are going to be mad over this one, he thought to himself. The high priestess didn't seem too appreciative of an Argonian trying to metamorphose from the start.

They took off into the springtide woods of Ald Raathim. On the mainland, far from the ash of Red Mountain, one could actually get lost in the wilderness. Particularly now that it was so green and lush with new growth.

Goranthir called out to Tazelhoth, and the wolf greeted him.

He was bigger than Allerleirauh had remembered, and he had been big in her remembrance.

"Ah," said Goranthir after a few barks of discussion. "He's ready to move on too. Six months of tackling wild guar and alit, and he thinks he's ready to go back to his pack in Solitude and vye for the lead alpha."

"The world is a funny place, and sometimes it has a mind of its own. You had other things to do. Things that precluded dying on that day.

"I think it does."

He looked back to the pregnant woman in the garden, and his brow furrowed in a frown. For a moment, his dark eyes seemed as if they were staring right through her, looking at something deeper than flesh... something that bothered him...

Then, suddenly, he smiled again.

"Congratulations," he said. "I'm sure your baby will be strong and healthy."

Allerleirauh touched noses with Tazelhoth. As a Welwa, she was not small herself.

"Good journey to you, friend," she said.

Nearby, deep in the dense wilderness, was a clearing, and within the clearing, a grove of small trees. There were eight of them, and they stood in a circle. They were 'imp' trees, growing not from the ground but from the skin of a dead tree, a tree whose trunk, when alive, had been wider than a peasant's house. The dead tree had rotted down to the ground now, forming a circle covered with brightly colored lichens and fungi.

The Welwa grasped her own skin and pulled it off, becoming a woman again, in a fur cloak.

"This is Nirn's temple," she said. "Three women tend it, sisters who escaped the Azurites by taking refuge in the hollow of the tree that used to stand here. The goddess protects her own."

But with the first words, Shaka felt a change in the air pressure, and felt a rumble underfoot.

Knowing the women would use their amulets, Shaka gestured in Recall and appeared outside the fortress of bone, still clutching the diary.

It had been an encounter she had been expecting, but not how she was expecting it to be. There was nothing else to do, but go back inside and get back to work. There was a lot of it to do.

Still, Herwyn's words haunted her as she met with merchants and guests, helped Tyradil and Tilitalia with their homework, and prepared reports for Loranna. It wasn't her day to die then? For hundreds of people, she had made a day for them to die.

The Diary of Manaviro

Rains Hand, 4th
Today I delt with another of Dibella's minions. On a lighter note, I found the last tomb. I shall wait to see what this month offers me

Rains Hand, 5th
Today I had a problem with the undead, the zombies would not dry out enough! I really should move to somewhere less humid. The collapse Trap has been completed, now anyone who trys to read this diary except me will be crushed under my castle.

(it goes on like this, till the Rains Hand, 25th)

Rains Hand, 25th
I have recieved word that a group of adventurers have been hired by Dibella to retrieve the skull. It is still too early to give it up, but I think I can convince them to leave me be for the time being. I hear one is doing this so Dibella can change him into a redguard. For what vain reason he does this, I do not know. nether the less, I shall cook up a polymorph potion and attempt to offer it to him to leave me alone

Rains Hand, 26th
They arrived at Gideon today, and should be here tomorrow. I have revieved further intelegence on the adventurers. Finished the potion. Once I deal with them, it should give me time to head to Kvatch, the cemetry there contains the final tomb, before more dibella supporters arrive

(there is no entry for Rains Hand, 27th, obviously Manaviro wrote in his diary at the end of each day)

Goranthir did not pray exactly.  Nirn was not the sort of goddess you asked things of.  You simply revered and respected her.  He let his mind, and all his senses open to her.

Finally, he stood, and kissed Allerleirauh.  "I'm ready."

"Remember," she said, touching the tip of his nose with her own. "Whatever this Tribunal may be, reports say that their power is convincing. Tris and I will watch you and help you as we can. Go with my love, and return safely."

Goranthir nodded. He knew what to do. What contacts to make with Helseth's spies.

At the quiet bay beneath Castle Daruhn, he went into the water and didn't resurface until he was in Vvardenfell.

Shaka looked at her, smiling slightly. "That's you all over, Tel; right to the point. The Colovian Highlands . . . . Can't say I've been there."

Shaka took the hands of the two women. "Let's sit down for a minute."

"Anya, you look as if you've seen a ghost. Do you feel like talking about it? I'd like to hear."

Shaka nodded, but didn't get up yet. "So you two are still up for a quest, kiting across Cyrodiil to Kvatch and chasing this monster? . . . I have to admit that I don't want to return to the priestess without the Skull, empty-handed. But the Colovian Highlands . . . ."

“Are far enough away we need to move now unless we want to lose our only lead on Manavrio,” Telera said. “We move now or we will have to find it by other means. Besides which it sounds like this completes whatever he is searching for if he succeeds. I don’t think we want that.”

Shaka rose to his feet. "I don't deserve you two. Not from the first. But yes, I'll go with you."

Their guide had apparently returned to Gideon, so the three set off down the road northwest.

The nymth

Ciric came in ordered a drink ( anything light ) and took a seat at the bar.

"Do you know if there are any jobs open around here?" He said tipping generously.

The triad took a series of Guild guide transports to the Colovian Highlands, arriving late that same evening. The exhausted Shaka, Tel and Anya decided to find an inn before attempting to track Manavrio in the cemetery.

Kvatch proved to be a city of stone, ancient from appearances. As they trudged through its streets, Shaka reflected that this far from Morrowind, one could almost forget the civil war. Their first transports had gotten a lower priority than war-related cargo and personnel, but not in these highlands.

Shaka drew his travelling cloak tighter. Spring here was still brisk.

At last they found an inn that was willing to take in the strange group of companions: Argonian, Bosmer, Dunmer. Woodelves were far from an unusual sight in Kvatch, but Dunmer were thinner on the ground and an Argonian was a curiousity.

I forget sometimes that Ald Raathim is still practically a frontier town, even with its history such as Barenziah, thought Shaka.

They rose before dawn and made their way to the city cemetery. Near commoners' graves lay the mausoleums of the city's well-off and powerful. Merchant families couldn't be distinguished from the nobility at first sight.

The likeliest tomb seemed to be one with its door freshly opened, as by force; all the others seemed locked. Shaka cast a Light spell with one hand as they descended into the sepulchre.

Posted by: syronj Oct 27 2005, 02:42 PM

When they reached the bottom of the steps, Shaka asked Anya and Telera to wait for him, unsure why he wanted to confront Manavrio alone.

A dozen tombs could be seen on the floor ahead. A small chapel could be glimpsed in a side wing. Shaka slowly threaded between the tombs, the Spear of Bitter Mercy at the ready.

He found one tomb with its stone lid moved aside. Two cloaked figures stood next to it; Shaka couldn't tell if he had been spotted.

'Greetings, Shaka, you have no need to sneek around like this,' one of the masked figures, who was obviously Manaviro said, turning to his companion, 'Go, leave us be, you know what you have to do,' turning once more to Shaka, 'I see your companions and yourself survived both your copies, and my collapsing castle trap, obviously you have read my diary to find me here, so tell me, why have you seeked me out once more?'

"Your diary hinted you're planning something, obviously necromantic. That was careless of you by the way, to leave it in your study. We couldn't return to Ald Raathim empty-handed."

"What are you up to, Manavrio? I don't see how the Skull of Corruption's power fits into your raising an undead minion . . . ."

Damn it, I thought he already knew where we came from, thought Shaka. I should have had Tel and Anya here after all, they'd have been smarter.

Shaka felt a slight thrill of uncertainty. This was a little like dealing with the Daedra . . . .

"Trade what, exactly?" What was Manavrio under his mask? Armor? A skeleton? Shaka still couldn't tell, but his phylactery would of course be strongly protected and probably far distant.

Shaka was stunned. This couldn't be so easy . . . .

Of course, the Dibellans would find Manavrio's diary invaluable. But the Skull of Corruption was legendary, priceless.

Shaka heard himself say the words before his brain really registered that he'd said them:

"If this isn't a trick . . . I think that could be done."

Manaviro placed the skull of corruption on a tomb, 'Throw me the book, you have my word that I shall do no harm, when I have checked to see if your not fooling me, I shall leave you be with the skull, are you fine with that?'

Anya and Tel are going to kill me for this, thought Shaka.

His voice screamed at him, Attack him! Why are you even bargaining with this lich?

But Shaka knew the answer. The mind before him was too powerful, the will honed by who knew how many lifetimes. Shaka was like a child saying "I hate you" to its parent, not knowing what hatred really was.

"Take the bloody thing then," said Shaka, and tossed the leather tome to Manavrio.

Manaviro caught the tome and passed his gloved hand over it, a green glow could be seen, 'All in all, this Tome is far more valuble to me than all the artifacts in Tarmiel. Within it contains my thoughts, my plans, my goals. The Dibellains would have rewarded you well if you surrended it to them in leau of the skull. I have no use for it now, as I said. Take it, and I hope that the Dibellians keep the promise. Keep our trade, however a secret, for they may not when they hear what you traded the skull for,' he prepared a recall spell, 'We shall surely meet again, for the heros of Ald Raatham would surely not let one such as myself live. And it is then, I shall have to slay you. Farewell' he dissapated leaving Shaka quite alone

Another being would have raged at Manaviro as he disappeared, but Shaka only stood for a moment, then walked over and picked up the Skull. It didn't seem to be a fake, not that the lich was small enough for such tricks. The Skull of Corruption virtually radiated age and power.

Even Vehk probably had to compromise with evil, sometimes; he tried to tell himself.

Shaka couldn't lie to Tel and Anya and still live with himself. But as for telling the Dibellans everything . . . . He didn't know.

After waiting the hour that Shaka had asked of them, Telera and Anya found him sitting in the small chapel, the Skull on the bench beside him.

She didn't ask what he did to get it, she didn't want to. Anya just wanted to go home.

Shaka nodded. He searched her eyes for a second. "I'll tell you both what happened, later. Are you . . . mad at me or something, Anya?"

"If I had fought him again, we might have lost everything instead."

Posted by: Teleran Oct 27 2005, 05:26 PM

Telera knew there hadn’t been a battle, no sounds of spellfire whatsoever, no shaking ground from explosions, the liches she had encountered previously had all used their share flashy, explosive and deadly tricks in battle, but Shaka had returned with the skull, that meant the lich had been down there, they had met and… ‘Who cares about a mouldy bag of bones, lets us get back to the war quicker. Fields of blood, streams of it, and victims lining up by the hundreds.’ Telera quashed that voice and echoed Anya’s sentiment, “We should go home now.”
