The Elder Scrolls Forums _ Elder Scrolls Lore _ RP: Morrowind Moonlight

Posted by: Nalion Yesterday, 04:24 PM

Hello, and welcome to our Elder Scrolls Role Playing threads, where we adventure and socialize in the vibrant land of Tamriel.

Before we begin, we'd like to clarify a few things:

This is an 'open roleplay' and everyone is encouraged to join in at any time!

'Open' roleplay does not mean 'unorganized' or 'limitless', however. The events in this story are usually planned, and if something BIG happens, you can be certain that it is the result of much discussion between players, usually in the mIRC chat (#Loranna_RP). This is not just a bunch of disorganized individuals doing what they think would be fun for their character at the time.

So, while everyone is welcome to join in, they are NOT welcome to jump in and do big, world-changing things without DISCUSSING IT FIRST. Let me be very clear about what cannot be done without permission:

1:
Any action that effects another person's character, for ill or good. Although most people realize they can't harm another person's character without permission, many don't realize that you can't HELP another character without permission, either. Many characters have flaws for a reason. Don't go healing, saving, or otherwise fixing another character without DISCUSSING IT FIRST with the player involved.

2:
Any event that would drastically change things that have been done to the world, whether the change is physical (rebuilding destroyed locations), political (converting a population to a new cause), military (killing off all the badguys) or anything else. Almost every situation, good or bad, that exists in the RP was done for some reason. Don't go changing or fixing things without DISCUSSING IT FIRST with the group.

Everyone who is involved in the RP is welcome in the mIRC chat channel #Loranna_RP. If you have a plot idea then you are encouraged to go there and discuss it. If you cannot get on the channel for some reason, or if the player whos character you would affect with your plan is not there, then PM them using this board's PM function. That's what it's there for.

For information on reaching #Loranna_RP via Mirc or Chatspike, look Here.

Not following the above advice will only result in one thing: your post is likely to be completely ignored by everyone as if it did not happen. This is obvously not good for anyone, so please, discuss major events before doing them.

Remember: Secret plans and surprises are seldom fun for anyone else. Before they're revealed they're boring, because nobody knows about them, and afterwards they're just annoying, because nobody knew about them.
Thank you, and have fun!

Summary:
In the last installment, Nalion, a male Breton mage, has continued to fulfill a task Allerleirauh has set him through a message delivered by Tris.

(OOC:) Isidor, the male nord, is discussing his trip to Skyrim, withj Loranna.

QUOTE

"Actually, I have a way to communicate better than letters," Loranna says. "Allow me to show you the lovely new mirror I just had put in the study, a gift from Her Majesty."

Loranna mulls over Isidor's words. A week, maybe two; it didn't seem much ...

"Where in Skyrim will you be heading?" Loranna asks. "Much as I like boat trips you're looking at a fair bit of time at sea if you go by boat; the guild guide's much faster assuming you are headed anywhere near the major cities ..."

What's left of them, she silently adds.

"Bewitched mirrors from a devious queen? Sounds great." He grins. "I'll probably start up near Winterhold, and work my way south, to the border with Cryodiil." He looks to the door and says "I'd like to leave as soon as I can, and get this over with."

ooc summary:

Tris Gaerington, a young male Breton, discussed important matters at length with Loranna. Then he went looking for Herwyn Brand, Queen Elysana's spymaster, in Wayrest city, but couldn't find him. He also looked in on his father's wife Ymalna but decided not to disturb her. At the present time he is in Ald Raathim, planning to give Barenziah a rose.

Ahjaar and Luxi were at the Druken Guar eating their breakfast. Ahjaar tryed to think, but the murmer from the rest of the bar and the ever flowing babble from Luxi caused her to loose track of her train of thought.

"..... I like the kwama eggs better then the nix hound meat 'cause its not so chewy and the...."

Ahjaar pretent to be listining to her, but she was really thing about the dream.. What was Red Life? Was it just a strange dream... or a vision... again?

She pushed it to the back of her mind.

"Mommy?"
"Yes?"
"Red life."
Ahjaar blinked. "Huh?"
"The knife." Luxi was pointing to a knife on the ground.
"You dropped it."
Ahjaar bent over and picked it up. "I didn't notice..."
"You okay mom? You've been acting weird."
Ahjaar shruged. "No, I'm fine... I was just thinking."
Luxi finished her kwama eggs. "Can we go down to the ocean?"
Ahjaar nodded. "Sure, I guess"

The first thought Herwyn Brand had after stepping toward the oddly flickering edge of the little park bridge was that he'd gone suddenly blind. The next moment, he realized he was falling.

Years of Battlemage training kicked in, and he uttered a spell of levitation. The sickening feeling in his stomach ceased, but otherwise there was no way to know that it had worked. He could see nothing but utter blackness. Then, turning, he saw a sight that made his stomach reel even more than falling. He saw the little bridge, the park, the city of Wayrest, and the world... but he saw it from the outside, looking in.

The Void; The place you are if you are nowhere. He stared fixedly at the world inside, unwilling to turn and again face the impossibly vast nothingness that lay at the corners of his vision. But something drew his eye. Something was there that was not nothing. Herwyn felt in his bones that if he looked, he would die, but if he did not, something worse might happen, and so he turned.

Although nothing could possibly be blacker than the Void, nothing colder, the thing that loomed before him fought to be both. A huge black cloak flailed wildly at the surrounding darkness, like stormclouds on a starless night. At its center, even blacker still, was an ebony-encased form not unlike a man, but huge, powerful, and terrifying. The creature seemed at once impossibly heavy and weightless, it's armored body hanging motionless in the darkness.

Herwyn Brand knew that the thing had a name; Leseth.

His throat was impossibly dry, and he thought he should feel ice form on his teeth as he opened his mouth. "I know you," he said with great effort.

"Yes..." said a cold, deep, quiet voice from within the swirling darkness. "And I know you, Herwyn Brand."

Herwyn felt his hands clench, a dozen protective spells coming to the front of his mind. "Do you intend to kill me, then?" he said, trying to sound defiant.

The laugh that issued from the cloak was one that would wilt flowers in springtime, and make the sun shine less bright. "Kill you? No. I shall not kill you. You are here, and so here you belong, Herwyn Brand..."

Herwyn considered if he should thank the thing, or attack first, but the cold voice continued, "Best of luck getting out."

Herwyn opened his mouth, but the thing was already gone. He was alone.

Struck suddenly by what Leseth had said, Herwyn dove toward the little marble bridge. It was an odd sensation, running into the world. He shook his head and tried again, but the cold darkness still surrounded him.

"Concentrate," he said aloud. Closing his eyes, he tried a bit slower, pressing himself on the edge of the world, but to no avail.

Panicked, he flew again and again at the world beyond his reach, buffeting against it like a moth against a window.

Panting and terrified, sweat and tears seeming to freeze on his skin, Herwyn hung limply, understanding now how far this place was from anywhere a human belonged. Only something like Leseth could possibly exist here.

But that was it! Leseth didn't live here. He knew! The Queen had once gone to the home of the beast. It was a house, in the normal world, in Alcaire, and its ceiling was the Void itself. If Herwyn could travel to Alcaire, to that house, surely he could get free of this place.

"Alcaire," he said to himself. "Not so far from Wayrest." He looked at the world, gaining his bearings, and set out in the direction that would take him to Alcaire.

Summary

Marein: Well, here we are then...

Shai: Yes! We are stuck in the head of some artist-noble!

Marein: Shai, where's that fantastic calm you normally keep? At least we can see again.

Shai: Sure we can see! We can see whatever this person who's WEARING us can see! Right now, her eyes are closed!

Marein: Don't worry about it, I'm working on it...

Shai: Look where your brilliant ideas landed us last time!

Marein: Focus, relax, meditate! Do that Zen stuff you do!

Shai: If I had HANDS I would THROTTLE you!

Yes, I know Zen doesn't exist in Tamriel...it's just a loose translation, that's all...

So Marein's big idea, as Allerleirauh described it, ended up making his and Shai's bodies vanish, basically infusing them into a jewel, which a character thus far described as an "artist noble" (until i finish this sketch i'm working on, then you'll see) is wearing under his instruction.

The circlet has undergone some major changes, as again will be clear in the sketch.

Summary

The not-so young male Dunmer Reichi has been longuing about aftering returning from helping Ahjaar and the others rescue Ahjaar's daughter.
-------------

Reichi had gotten bored and gone off in search of something to do. Luckily, a guard caught him and asked Reichi to sparr with him, saying that with the attempt on Lady Loranna's life in the bay recently, that a sparr against a former assassin might help prepare him for any others. Reichi had wholeheartedly agreed. A few moments later found them sparring in the castle courtyard.

The guard's longsword clashed against Reichi's Daedric Shortsword, and the Dunmer brought the Dagger of Senses around to strike the guard while his blade was preoccupied, but the guard blocked it with his sheild. Reichi leapt back, before rushing the guard with a almost inhuman speed, swinging Bloodfang and the Dagger with great speed, looking as if he was swinging wildly more than attacking. The guard took cover behind his sheild, dropping lower to protect his legs, and stabbed out with his longsword. Reichi was forced back by the longer weapon. But the guard's bonemold sheild was heavily scarred by Bloodfang.

The two continued to sparr for some time, until the guard decided he had enough. He thanked Reichi and headed off, Reichi sheathed his blades, and sighed.

Shaka, an Argonian battlemage, was standing on the balcony outside Loranna's guest wing and thinking.

He felt a greater contentment, now that Anya was free from her sister's wrath. Maybe he wouldn't be moving on just yet. . . .

Shaka had helped return the unconscious Anya to her quarters, and had asked a female servant to tend to her. Shaka hadn't wanted to impose on Anya while the Bosmer was still feeling fragile.

When she was up to it, Shaka was considering asking her to train him in archery, and perhaps further in stealth. He had become too dependent on a few spells or abilities over the years -- fireball spells, basic healing, and the like. It was time to try to grow.

Shaka had seen Ahjaar and Luxi from a distance, and it had softened his attitude toward the adventurers. He was no longer sure he could judge them so simply for the battle with the smugglers. Perhaps they had been driven by the need to find the girl . . . . Still, he suspected he was not wholly wrong in being concerned.

When Shaka saw Anya at some point this day, he would tell her something that had been going through his mind: I'm sorry that you weren't able to say goodbye to your sister at the Mage Guild, Anya. Her eyes were clear in the end. . . . I hope that you will see her again, but not for a long time.

It was good to look out from the castle again without brooding.

"Isidor, I found out recently that there are Nord colonists outside of town, left over from the Blue Dawn. Do you think that maybe you could find a home there?"

Goranthir regaled his grandmother Barenziah with tales of adventure, describing the fight with Blade with great enthusiasm, before admitting that he did not like the end, the interrogation. She was weak then, helpless.

"Fighting a worthy adversary and besting her is satisfying," the Queen Mother agreed. "But it is not a game, Goran. Sometimes we cannot fight against an equal, but someone weaker, and sometimes considerably stronger. Is this the path that you truly want to take?"

"Aye, grandmother," Goranthir said with confidence. "It is."

"Then you have my blessings," Barenziah smiled. "I must leave today for Necrom, and then I will be going to Vvardenfell. I will look into the new prisoners at Sadrith Mora with pride in my grandson … Would you tell Lady Loranna that I would like to say goodbye?"

Goranthir kissed his grandmother’s cheek, and went to find Loranna. Barenziah waited in the herb garden while her men began the process of loading up her barge.

Summary for Loranna:

Loranna, the ashen-skinned Nord Lady of Ald Raathim, has recently helped Anya and Shaka deal with the ghost of Anya's sister Allina, calling upon the power of Dibella to temporarily mitigate Allina's unbearable suffering and rage so that a reconcilliation could be had. To do so, however, Loranna discovered that she had to bear Allina's burden for a brief time.

Soon after, while resting from that ordeal, Loranna spoke with Tris about upcoming troubles, and is making plans to assemble a group of people for an unknown mission ...

Loranna hears through her servants that Goranthir is looking for her, and has a servant direct Goranthir to her study.

The moment of awkward desire she had felt when trying to comfort Tris had passed, though she still felt upset at herself for having it. But the moment was past now and Tris seemed to have understood her original intent. Her mind was turning now more to her task at hand.

"The Queen Mother has asked to say goodbye to Loranna," Goranthir said. "But I have already said my goodbyes."

QUOTE(Loranna @ Aug 7 2005, 09:23 PM)

"We were just going to bid Her Majesty farewell; Goranthir tells me she is leaving us," Loranna says to Nalion.  "And you never know, I might not be there to hug you when you do have to leave, so I figured I'd get it in now," she adds, eyes twinkling.

Looking to Goranthir, Loranna says "Nalion's right - on both counts."

*

"Then I won't keep you from your appointment, Loranna.", Nalion said, then turned to Goranthir. "If you have already said you goodbyes, how about we take a stroll to the tavern and get ourselves something to eat?"

Nalion bowed closer to Goranthir's ear. "Something with more flavour than you get here."
The mage winked wryly. "Even if I have to leave, that doesn't mean we shouldn't use the time to get to know each other."

"And so the men elect to head off as the two women get together," Loranna notes with a wry grin. "Enjoy, both of you - and I heard that, Nalion."

Chuckling, Loranna says "We'll talk later, Goranthir; thank you again for going to help Ahjaar. Nalion, no corrupting him - yet."

With that, Loranna turns to head into the herb garden.

The young ranger laughed. "I suppose I can practice after."

He smiled to Loranna and instinctively gave a short bow before leaving.

Barenziah, the Queen Mother, was in the garden, tracing outlines in the dirt path with a stick. She looked up at Loranna's approach, "Hello, Lady Loranna."

The mage led Goranthir down to the tavern and they took a seat near the bar. He called a barmaid to bring him some wine and bread and asked her to bring Goranthir whatever he wished.

"I hope you are finding your stay in Morrowind pleasant so far. It must be very different from Summerset. It took me quite some time to accommodate with the local customs here.", Nalion began.

“I have many more miles to travel,” the Queen smiled. “And I heartily doubt that all my meetings will be as pleasant as this one has been.”

“I was thinking about Ald Raathim’s defenses,” she said, turning to the markings in the dirt, which Loranna could see was an outline of Ald Raathim. “It seems to me that with all the new trade coming in to your port, you will need warehouses and a stockade here –“ she motioned with the stick. “At your port.”

“Your tower provides a great view of the bay, but as it is used for your study, it is likely no one will around to see any trouble. I think it would be wise to add another tower at the port with a warning bell, and then perhaps one on the western border. The highest point in the foothills of the Velothi Mountains, if you had a fifty foot tower with barracks for guards … You should have your guards put their hands on the mirror, so they can quickly let whoever’s at the castle know if they see anything amiss …”

The Queen looked up and laughed, “I’m sorry. Planning for the worst is a natural instinct to me. I don’t mean to imply you don’t have plans of your own to shore up your domain’s defenses. I just thought I could help out with plans and finances.”

"I can imagine; even here, not everyone was wholly enthused, as we saw," Loranna says. "May luck be with you on your journey, Your Majesty."

Loranna looks down at the Queen's sketchings, memorizing the details. "It's all right, Your Majesty; I always welcome additional input." Grinning slightly sheepishly, she says "After all, I am still new to being a noblewoman."

"I've asked Kallen to prepare a report on finances for what I had been thinking of doing," she says. "I'll relay your suggestions to him, and Dram."

She frowns thoughtfully at the sketches. "Hmm ..." she mutters, thinking over scenerios in her head.

"I was born in a small village near the town of Shornhelm, yes. Almost on the border of the Wrothgarian Mountains.", the mage's eyes grew distant for a brief moment as he remembered his youth, and a touch of sadness, too. "I had to leave my village in the hurry of a dark night, though, when I was eighteen. I can say though, that the reason for my flight was resolved with the help of many of the companions around only recently. High Rock is beautiful, but still, things are not at ease there."

The Breton broke away a piece from his bread and began to eat, then washed it down with wine.

Summary: Anya, a Wood Elf Rogue with blonde hair and a tattoo cherry on her left cheek, is just walking around, trying to find someone to help figure out what happened when she came to terms with her long dead sister.
----
Where is everybody? she wondered. Anya walked down the halls, still more than confused, she stepped out onto the street into town. I need a drink.

Anya forgot she was still wearing the plain, white gown and was excited as a slight breeze blew by, her blonde hair, normally tied in a bun, flowing in the wind. She pulled her arms across her chest and continued to the tavern, shrugging it off.

As she entered the tavern, she noticed a slightly familar face, "Nalion? I don't see you much, your usually off doing your magey thing. And is the cute knight people are saying we've picked up to keep?"

She sat dow in the booth with the two, facing Nalion.

"My men are loading up my barge now, but they're also removing some dead weight. Gold is so heavy, but I think your treasury can support it. If you already have more than enough to put up defenses, use it for decoration," Barenziah idly touched the area of the map where the port was indicated. "Merchants always appreciate little signs of opulence. Maybe a couple statues welcoming them into the port ..."

Barenziah laughed at herself. "As you see fit, my dear."

She embraced Loranna. "Thank you, my dear, for me, for my kingdom, and for taking in my grandson. We spoke, and he understands that though you and your friends have given him this opportunity, the rest is up to him to prove."

Shaka saw the group from across the tavern. Anya looked as well as could be expected; strange to see her without her quilted and Glass armor, but she also looked beautiful.

http://photobucket.com/albums/v320/ithilbeam/3faces2.jpg was having trouble sleeping. There were annoying voices arguing in her head. Irritated, she took the off her head and slept.

Marein: Oy! Put the crown back on! I can't see, I can't hear!

Shai: She can't hear you, idiot.

Diamond awoke later and did put the crown back on - as long as she was not trying to sleep, she enjoyed talking to Shai and Marein...or so she had for the brief period she had used the object.

Marein: You know what I'm craving right now? A drink. Maybe a gamble

Diamond: Well, I feel like painting...

Shai: Blasted royalty with their blasted pastimes...

Diamond: Hmm, actually, a drink doesn't sound too bad.

Marein: Ha! It worked!

So Marein took the trio down to the tavern, where he found Nalion deep in conversation with a girl he didn't recognize and a regal-looking Dunmer.

"Nalion!" He exclaimed through Diamond's mouth.

Diamond: Hey! Don't do that!

Marein: Aww, please?

Diamond had no idea who Nalion was.

Loranna notices during the embrace that Barenziah carried a rose in her hand. One that clearly did not come from the garden at Daruhn.

"Your Majesty," said the captain of the royal guards. "Sorry to intrude, but your barge is ready to sail."

Barenziah kissed Loranna's cheek, and followed her captain to the port.

Loranna watches Barenziah leave, thinking to herself So, that's what Tris was up to ... with a bit of a grin.

There was so much to do; she needed to talk with Kallen about Ald Raathim's sudden increase in fortunes, make plans for how to put it to best use. She needed to find the others to start laying the groundwork for Allie's plans; Tris was right, they had a lot of work to do before the time came ...

She is stunning, and beutiful, Loranna thinks to herself, touching her cheek. ... She'd probably eat me alive though, but I don't think I'd mind.

... Okay; I have sex on the mind a bit too much today; let's go talk to Kallen Lor,
Loranna tells herself, heading out.

Furious, Diamond tore the crown off of her head once more. She certainly owed Nightscar the favor, but he was ruining everything. He was, as far as she knew, off studying enchantments somewhere. He didn't need to keep an eye on all this.

Nalions gaze studied the Nord - she was rather small for one of this race - from head to boots, then his gaze rested on the crown in her hand. Where had he seen this thing before. It seemed familiar.

In a vault in the dark or at a pulsing pillar, or both?

"Marein's crown!", he exclaimed, then brought himself under control. Ignoring Diamond's outstretched hand, he motioned her to take a seat across the table. "This crown belonged to Marein Night-Scar, a companion in the Vaults of Gemin and at Hogithum. I think an explanation is in order.", he explained and his voice sounded as if he would tolerate no excuses.

"Goranthir," he said for introduction. He had almost said "Of Firsthold," but he stopped himself short.

*

Diamond hesitated. Was this a gesture of friendship?

QUOTE(Nalion @ Aug 7 2005, 01:08 PM)

"I don't think there is immediate danger, Goranthir. Rest easy.", Nalion said, looking at the Dunmer for a brief moment.

*

Marein: Damn! Diamond, we have to tell him...

Still appearing confident, Diamond took Goranthir's hand briefly, smiled apologetically for ignoring the large Nord, and said, "Diamond, pleased to meet you. Nalion," she lowered her voice, "You're right. Can I talk to you outside?"

Anya turned to the latest newcomer too, "Anya, it's interesting to meet you."

Anya turned to Nalion when his voiced raised slightly in exclamatio, cutting further conversation short for the moment. "Marein? Who was Marein, Nalion? I still don't know of all who fought back then."

*

"Marein was a Bosmeri companion who fought with us in the vaults of Gemin. He also was present at Hogithum.", Nalion explained to Anya, Goranthir and Isidor rather shortly. "But perhaps Diamond here can tell us a story about him, too?"

Shaka watched Goranthir and Anya with dismay. He couldn't bring himself to dislike the mer, who was too competent and unpretentious to resent; but Goranthir was closer to Anya's age, in addition to everything else.

He felt like handing Thom's longknife to Isidor and telling him to "Pith me like a frog, put me out of my misery, kid," but restrained himself.

Anya owed him nothing, and he still had an obligation to Loranna and her people. " ' Duty is heavier than a mountain; death, lighter than a feather,' " he repeated to himself mentally, but it only helped a little.

Diamond: You LIED to him?

Marein: I did not! I'm hurt! I showed him the crown, I told him that this was all that was left of me. Perfectly true. Would you rather I told him that you were a runaway who allowed me to partially take over your body? Think he'd trust you THEN?

"I would also doubt you'd be here if you weren't compitent, Goran." Anya smiled, "My rough days? Now there is a pity story if I've ever heard one. Only if you promise to tell me about yourself, and what you think your good at as well."

Settling back, she pulled on the memories again, midly suprised and very happy that they didn't torment her, they simply just were now. "Have you ever been a slave? Hah, never mind, don't answer that. Suffice to say it's enough to mar anyone, especially young girls, if you understand. Apperently it was enough to changed my sister gravely, even after death, as well."

"She ended up blaming me for actions I had no control over. And sought to punish me for it, ironically it was actions brought on by a few of the companions we now travel with that allowed her to do that, after so many years of death. I ended up confronting her with the help of them too, and was able to come to some understanding with her."

"I'm just looking to press onward now, and make a new life for the second time. Now, do explain something about yourself as well. You can't be much older than me, and yet her you are, you must be able to handle yourself."

"Away from here." he turned to Reichi "I can't stay here any longer. I'm not needed, and I'm just leeching off of Loranna's hospitality. Perhaps I'll move to the Nordic settlement near here. Or perhaps I'll return to Skyrim and become a bandit. I don't know. There's just no reason for me to continue to stay there."

He glanced over at the woodelf again and started, "I still upheld Vivec's laws and dispelled Daedra at their shrines for weeks at a time, i was very confused, but now my path is less shrouded and I can put my skills to use protecting Ald Raathim, Guard or not."

"It was a hard time for all involved and I am glad to hear that you would offer your skills to Ald Raathim. We may have room for seasoned warriors. It's easier to understand the companions when one knows their background.", Nalion answered.

Reichi frowned. "You don't need to go, whether or not your needed is a moot point, you have friends here, who want you to stay. Besides, while not needed, a extra blade around is always good," he said.

"You answered the question yourself, I'm just a wood elf." She nodded curtly, "Anya, a simple rogue."

QUOTE(syronj @ Aug 7 2005, 04:41 PM)

Must be one of only a handful of Ordinators left in the world, thought Shaka, and those probably scattered widely into the bargain.  As a member of the Temple, briefly, he had seen the warrior elite but hadn't fraternized with them.

He could see Anya's tension, so he squeezed her hand affectionately and set it down.  Shaka met her eyes and tried to convey the sense that It's okay, I'm still here.

*

Anya felt her cheeks redden. Anya glanced at him, the corner of her mouth curled up, she was glad he was responsive to her feelings.

Earlier that morning:

On his return from Wayrest, Tris lingered in the Void, placing the people he knew. This had, in times not to long ago, been his job; spying from the safety of the Void, finding people. He was out of practice.

He found Queen Barenziah in Jazbet's herb garden. Loranna's herb garden, he corrected himself. Everything couldn't stay "Jazbet's" forever, now that Jazbet was dead.

It felt strange and somehow wrong to watch her from here. Not a feeling he had felt before. But looking at her from a distance was as intimate as touching her silver, silken hair. The hair that refused to be bound. Right now it was slipping, one soft tendril touching her cheek, and the impulse to touch it and set it to rights was intense.

He slipped Inside, within the castle where no one could see, and went to bow to Barenziah's guards. "Would her Majesty be willing to have a few words with me?"

Isidor began to speak, his voice soft and strong "My family lived in a small village, south of Dawnstar. My father was the chief of the tribe there. He was a good man, but he was very strict. There was a man in the tribe, named Striter the Obvious."

"He didn't like my father, or the way he ruled. He and my father were always at loggerheads, about something. Where we got our water from, what we did about the wolves around our village, and the behavior of myself and my brother."

"One day, after a celebration for a birthday, Striter and his friends got drunk. I was out with a female friend of mine in the woods. Striter and his friends went in to my house.." Isidor fought back tears, but continued "and they killed my family. My little sister, my brother, my father and my mother. He even cut off my brother's dog's leg."

"My family was unrecognizeable, when I returned. My father's eyes had been gouged out, and stuck into my mother's mouth. My brother had been brutally dismembered, and his limbs had been hung from the ceiling. My mother had been...violated, before she died. I came back to the house, saw what had been done, and knew that Striter had done this. Very calmly, I picked up my father's axe, walked over to his shack, and cut him in two."

"No one believed me that Striter had killed my family, no matter what I said. The council of elders punished me, cast a mark on my arm, and told me that I was to never return to Skyrim, under penalty of death."

He looked around "Does that answer your question?".

He offered her the rose - the most perfect, full, deep-scented rose he had found in the large hedge surrounding a manor outside Wayrest - briliant red velvet petals edged with wine, shading to black.

"Ah, you don't know as many of my secrets as I thought you did," Tris said. "I'm a very fast runner. It's why Queen Elysana doesn't like me."

Kratos wandered into the tavern where he had spent most of his time in Ald Raathim beside the Palace courtyard. He looked around and found a table with many sitting around it including a fair dunmer with blue eyes which struck his curiosity.

He walked to where they were sitting and took a chair from a nearby table and sat down. "It seems I have dented my armor slightly, is there a smith hear in Ald Raathim?"

*

"There is," Loranna says. "Our finest smith is Longhammer; I can direct you to him ..."

She looks over Kratos. "You must be the Ordinator Dram was telling me about. I'm Dres Loranna, Lady of Daruhn. Welcome to our fair home, serjo."

QUOTE(Stargazey @ Aug 7 2005, 09:01 PM)

*

Loranna looks over at Isidor, sympathy in her eyes. "That's ..."

"Ah, you don't know as many of my secrets as I thought you did,"  Tris said. "I'm a very fast runner. It's why Queen Elysana doesn't like me."

He wondered, for a moment, if her Dunmer senses were different enough from his own that she could smell the blood he had wiped from the thorns.

"I am not omniscient, though please don't tell any that," Barenziah laughed. "It is a very dear gift, Tris, thank you."

"I mourn for your loss, Isidor. I did not know. I hope someday, these rifts between you and your village can be mended.", Nalion answered, his eyes sorrowful. "Perhaps there is time in the future where we can go to your village and help you unveil the truth to the village council."

Shaka said, "I'm sorry, Isidor. I only knew the minimum before." He had noticed Isidor's intense gaze on Anya, and wished he could tell him aloud that perhaps one day Isidor would find someone, even another Nord.

For Shaka's part, whatever connection he had made with Anya was one he didn't take for granted.

If Goranthir thought he was intruding on a romantic interlude, he did not show it. He ran into the garden with the enthusiasm of an overgrown puppy, embracing Tris, and then giving his grandmother a kiss on the cheek.

"Tris saved my life, did he tell you?" Goranthir said, and observing the expression on her face, could tell he hadn't. "Of course not. But he did. This assassin woman, Blade, had some kind of throwing knives, and Tris deflected one of them heading right for me. I could've been dead before I even saw my first enemy on my first adventure if not for him."

"That is very comforting," Barenziah frowned. "What if he is not there to protect you the next time?"

"He will be," Goranthir grinned.

We're going to be limited to no more than eight people, and we'll need a balanced set of skills - pure physical force, magic both offensive and healing, stealth and ranged weapons - and, even more importantly, we're going to need teamwork and tactics. What little I do know about the forces we'd be facing tells me that we'd be going against people used to working together as a unit, not just a group of individuals; to counter that, we'd have to do the same. People will have to trust one another with their lives, trust the healers to keep them whole, trust the fighters to hold the line, trust the archers and the mages to pick off enemies before they can do likewise."

She pauses a moment, looking around, then says " ... Any of you curious why I'm asking this, by the by?" with a bemused expression.  "You are allowed to inquire why I'm requesting you put yourselves in peril, you know."

"I hope he's never hurt like that. No one should ever go through what I went through," Tris said, then realized how arrogant it sounded. "Surely we're allowed to smooth the road for each other, just a little."

"Of course," Barenziah laughed. "If I could, I would fill the world with feathers, so nothing would ever hurt someone I love. I just don't want you to think that I'm asking you to be his bodyguard, only his friend. And you are to send him back to me the moment he is too much of burden."

Cradling Tris's face in her hands, the Queen Mother raised him to her lips, kissed him tenderly, and whispered, "You should go. I have suggestions for the defense of Ald Raathim I want to present to Loranna, and I'm having trouble concentrating right now, looking at you."

"Right then, the background; as you know, there's been a problem with ghosts returning from the dead," Loranna says. "This has been going on for some time, and though Ald Raathim right now is relatively quiet, the problem hasn't gone away. In fact, overall, it's just been getting quietly worse."

"My friend Allerleirauh, who many of you know so far only through reputation, has been working all along on a way to mend the rift between the worlds of the living and the dead. Barenziah watched him go, smiling sadly. Despite her assurances to him, it would doubtless be some time before she was able to see the handsome young Breton again. It was a big kingdom, and there were many more places to visit before she could rest and indulge herself.

She picked up the rose from where it fell. Already the smell was slightly different. A little older. It was dying.

Barenziah picked up a stick and began drawing out a map of Ald Raathim in the dirt ...

OOC: Thus ends the flashback.

"You will all have to work together in this, it seems. Get to know each other, both, your strengths and weaknesses. Once a weakness is recognized as such, it is no weakness anymore and can even be a weapon against the enemy. Rely on your friends to complement your abilities."

"Thanks Reichi," Loranna says, sticking out her tongue. "Ruin my big speech moment why don't you?"

"But, to continue ..." Loranna pauses a moment, collecting her thoughts. "Solin, some time ago, recieved a cockatrice's egg; within the egg is the solution to the problem. But the egg itself is not enough; it must be used in the proper place. Allie and the others have gone to prepare this place - a place beyond the spheres of the Divines."

"Allie and the others are waiting for us to join them, that the egg may be used; to do so, we will have to pass through the spheres of the Divines themselves, to reach the prepared place. I'm told ... well, I'm told that the experience will be harrowing. What you think defines you, will be lost as you go further and further out."

Loranna grimaces. "That's not mush of a description, but it's the best I can offer right now. I haven't been outside the spheres of the divines yet; I can only go by what I've been told by Allie, and her letters. I know there's powerful things out there, spirits that have done nothing save wage battle for who knows how long ... but beyond that, I know nothing."

"I also don't know what, exactly, will be done when we get to where we're going," Loranna admits. "I can speculate, but choose not to right now. But Allie has said to come, and I trust her; there are enemies and so we must be prepared to fight our way there. And once we get there ... we will see what else must be done. And then we will do it."

Wonderful. Shaka knew a suicide mission when he heard one, despite his earlier bravado.

But then he reflected, if this were twenty years ago, it would matter. But my life has led me here, and if it ends this way, what difference from being able to die in bed a few decades from now.

He was already picking up body language from Anya that meant he was about to get his heart broken anyway.

Goranthir guided the guar back to their farms. They weren't smart enough to find their way on their own. That was the thing about communicating with animals -- just because you could speak to them didn't make them any smarter.

The young ranger was covered from head to toe with mud and dust, and was limping slightly from a bruise to the leg when he didn't duck one of the guar's charges fast enough. He began the long walk to the castle.

Diamond sat motionless in her room at the tavern, retreated deep into the recesses of her mind. She spoke at length with Marein and Shai, who explained that their bodies, in their rash experimentation, had in fact been eliminated. Diamond felt a surge of pity.

Marein: Hey, wait...look outside your room!

Diamond: There's a group of people over there, who are they?

Shai: Loranna and Co.

Diamond: I see. Looks like something's up. I'm going to go look.

Marein: Whoa, hang on their, missy. I'M going to go check, like we agreed this afernoon.

Diamond: Nightscar, I can't stand this. I ran away to get out on my own, not to have a little voice in my head controlling what I do. I owe you, all right? But I need you to shut up.

Marein: But...but...

Shai: So be it.

Diamond: I'll keep you guys with me. If I ever need anything, I'll ask you. You can see through my eyes, hear through my ears. But I absolutely forbid you from touching any of my muscles. I'm here to learn about myself, about life. I need to do that on my own. These guys have a reputation for getting into big stuff. I need to go with them, I need to play along. I need to do something for myself.

Marein: I don't know, Di.

Diamond reached up to take the crown off of her head, but soon felt Nightscar's presence in her mind, grappling.

Marein: Hey! At least let me think about it!

They pushed back and forth, her arm twitching uncontrollably in the air.

Something finally gave. Diamond's hand forced its way forward to touch the crown and wrestled it off of her head. The battle resumed, her arm waving the crown all over the room, her hand unable to drop it...until it broke.

The refined ebony was still intact, as was the precious sapphire - but the two had come detached. Abruptly, the conflict ended. Diamond was alone again. She panicked. What if the crown had been Marein's last hope of survival? Had she killed him?

She grabbed the circlet, feeling for the presence in her mind.

Nothing happened.

Howling in desperation, she grabbed the sapphire orb and held it, hoping with all her might...

Marein: All right, you win! Just don't break me!

Sighing in teary relief, Diamond agreed on a deal with Marein and Shai, as she had outlined earlier. Then she wiped her eyes and went outside to talk to Loranna and the others, who thought she was the voice now dormant in her head.

Spotting a familiar face where they sat, she cried, "Anya!" and hurried over.

"It was an illusion spell, see? Marein's been doing a lot of magic recently. I suppose he must have told you all he was me, right? Yeah, that must have been it. I'm really sorry. He's gone off east now. I think this must have been his idea of a joke, he always has been a regular rogue."

She smiled nervously and chuckled, her hands twisting convulsively.

"You're just getting yourself in deeper, Nord," said Shaka. "But since I haven't met Marein, it's not really for me to judge."

"Who, me?" stammered Diamond. "My name is Diamond. Diamond of Moonguard, High Rock. You're Loranna, of course. But I'm not Marein. Well, I was, this afternoon, but I'm not right now. I was though. Now I'm me. Instead of him. When he was me."

She slipped her hand into the back of her robes and gripped desperately  onto the sapphire, calling for help, but just as quickly pulled it away, determined to solve the problem herself.

"It was an illusion spell, see? Marein's been doing a lot of magic recently. I suppose he must have told you all he was me, right? Yeah, that must have been it. I'm really sorry. He's gone off east now. I think this must have been his idea of a joke, he always has been a regular rogue."

"That's not what he sai-" Anya quickly shut her mouth when something dawned on her. Then how... ah well. Whatever it is, she want's to leave it be.

"Well, it's a pleasure to meet you now, Diamond. Relax and have a drink, that's my answer to most problems." Anya said

"What is there to explain? This morning, I arrived in town along with Nightscar, the rogue. He's been doing magical study. When we got here, he said he was leaving again, returning to solitude. Not Solitude in Skyrim, solitude the state of being. He said that he would come down to the tavern and get me a room. Then he did some illusory magic, and there was some green light, and he started imitating me and walked down to the tavern. I didn't want to be seen chasing him, people would think I was nuts..."

Diamond noticed Anya's look of realization, and quickly added her to the top of the list of people to know.

The last sentence caused Goranthir to spit up the wine he was sipping.

He giggled, holding his hand over his mouth.

There is a harumph from Nalion, the Breton's expression clearly indicating that Diamond's current story did not sit well with him.

"Let me see if I got this straight; Maerin, gone for a long time, returns here where he has many friends, promptly does a parlor trick to go meet people in the tavern, then just ups and leaves before even seeing half the people here?" Loranna asks.

"Dear, perhaps you should tell us where Maerin is now," Loranna says, her eyes narrowing.

Struggling to ignore Goranthir's reaction, Diamond instead chose to respond to Loranna. "He'll be long gone, I suppose. Said he was heading east. Elsweyr maybe? Or Valenwood, he might have relations there. He'd have passed through Guild Guides and Silt Striders and been halfway."

"And he didn't even stop to say hi to me," Loranna says, clearly not thrilled.

"So, if he wasn't planning on staying, why did he come all the way out here? And why were you with him?" Loranna asks, looking over at Anya and Goranthir and the others.

"Did Maerin say anything about this when he was here earlier?" she asks.

Clearing her throat with a drink, she murmered under her breath, "It's not like he left anyway. Though why hew remains aloof now does confuse me."

"No need for that, let me try to clear up what I can." Anya frowns hoping she isn't overstepping any boundries Marein might wanted.

"I don't think Marein actually left. Simply because Diamond here knew me when she came down, if this wasn't the same Diamond I met earlier, she couldn't have possibly known me. Even if Marein told ehr about others, Marein didn't actually know me.

"So this is still Marein, I think. He said earlier that a transformation changed him into the small woman, but his actions didn't exactly support this. His, er her, demeanor change several times, from a sure-footed Marein speaking with Nalion to a timid Diamond that you see now. So I'm not sure yet if this is a changed Marein or Marein inside Diamond."

Anya looked around, "Did you get that?"

Diamond gave up with a wince, reaching back into her robe for the jewel and placing it before the others.

"I've not been wholly truthful with you, since I didn't want to seem mad," she said hesitantly, "but I think I've failed enough at that. If anyone would like to place their hands on this jewel, they will undertand..."

She looked at them pleadingly, hoping.

"Just explain the truth dear; you're talking to the woman who ran around with a Daedra Prince inside her for over half a year. Don't worry how it sounds, just say it."

"No offense, but you're not all right," Goranthir said, no longer smiling. "When someone who seems to be possessed, or a compulsive liar, asks me to touch a jewel so that everything will become clear ... it's just not very convincing."

Then, seeing the looks of disbelief on their faces, she changed her mind, closing her hand around the jewel and nodding solemnly at Goranthir.

"I'm not Marein Nightscar," she began. Then suddenly she straightened up and got a devilish glint in her eye.

"Now, I am." A pause, then the glint was replaced by absolute serenity. "I'm also Shai."

The posture that seemed to indicate the real Diamond launched into an explanation of Marein's plan to be in two places at once through her, which had ended up leaving him and Shai both without any bodies at all - for all intents and purposes, they were the jewel. She explained also what may have seemed as madness, the rotation of the presences in her mind, but added that they had siince come to an agreement and she was in control of herself.

"So you see, I tried to avoid that story about voices in in my head and that sort of thing, since I thought it to be rather unbelievable, but it's the truth..."

Loranna listens, her expression impassive.

" ... Maerin, did you forget I myself was possessed before the Blue Dawn?" she says at last. "Why didn't you tell this girl just to come on out and say the truth ..."
