Kellen

The Elder Scrolls show us what was, and what yet will be.

...and they have revealed much to me.

Isha

Spare us your stories, old man, unless they can sharpen spears. Our warchief is dying. Our enemies are massing for another attack. We must prepare for battle.

Nagh

We should go, Kellen. We have the scroll we came for. This one smells blood in the wind.

Kellen

Patience Nagh, I have words yet to speak here.

Stories can do surprising things, spearmaiden, whether they are true or not. And this is one you should hear. It comes from the Great War that nearly ended the empire.

It began when the High Elves slaughtered every Imperial Blade.

Calling themselves the new Aldmeri Dominion, they and their allies swept through the land.

...even capturing the Imperial City itself.

The emperor fled north, leaving Cyrodiil to the invaders.

This is the story of a forgotten hero who changed the very course of history.

Reive

Bring me a warrior with strength and courage.

That Nord looks adequate. Bring the mortal forth.

And for his opponent...

That one!

Chapter 1: The Fighting Pit

Tyr

Sorry. Better your blood than...

Player

A battle between the player and Tyr ensues.

Tyr

Why do I have a feeling they're going to kill us either way?

Player

The Player defeats Tyr in a guided battle.

Tyr

You're pretty good with that axe. We work together, we might have a chance.

Chapter 2: The Escape

Tyr

I'm Tyr. One of the Blades.

Two of us. A dozen of them. It's almost a fair fight."

Player

The Player, together with Tyr, fight a group of Boethiah cultists. After the Cultist's defeat:

Daedric Cultists

You'll never escape. Reive will destroy you!

Chapter 3: Dark Omens

Tyr

I'm guessing that's Reive.

Reive

These mortals must not be allowed to reveal Lord Naarifin's plans. Destroy them!

Player

Tyr and the Player fight Reive, eventually defeating him.

Reive

You are stronger than I thought, mortal. But you will not be able to prevent The Culling. Blood will flow, and my master will let loose darkness upon the world.

Chapter 4: Bandit Ambush

Kellen

The Dremora's words unnerved the hero. They journeyed north to meet Laaneth, a sorceress friend of Tyr's well versed in Daedric matters. But the road ahead was far from clear.

Bandit

Look what we have here. Standard fee. Hand over your coin or you die.

Bandit

This is our road. Nobody passes here without paying a tribute.

Tyr

We haven't got any money. As for taking our lives...

Player

A fight ensues between the Player and the bandits.

Tyr

We're outnumbered. Let's take some of them out before they overwhelm us.

Player

Eventually defeats the bandits.

Kellen

The last bandit, seeing his fallen companions, dropped to his knees.

He said that if the hero spared his life, he would show them where the robbers had hidden their ill-gotten treasure. But the merchant demanded justice.

Isha

And what did your hero do ?

Player

Chooses "spare"

Player

Chooses "execute"

Kellen

Mercy can be a profitable virtue.

Kellen

The bandit's villainous career ended there.

Chapter 5: Fugitives

Tyr

Dominion Guards!

Guard

Halt! We're looking for a rogue Blade who matches your description.

Tyr

There must be some misunderstanding.

Guard

What kind of misunderstanding?

Tyr

The kind where you thought we'd come quietly.

Player

Fights, and wins, against the Dominion Guards.

Chapter 6: The Hungry Pack

Kellen

They chose to avoid the roads. But of course, the wilderness has its own dangers.

Player

The Player and Tyr are attacked by a pack of wolves.

Tyr

Keep your guard up, or these wolves will tear us apart from the shadows.

Player

Defeats the wolves.

Kellen

Once they dispatched the beasts, they heard a whimpering sound. Under a nearby bush lay a cowering wolf pup.

Isha

Did they take it in?

Player

Chooses "adopt"

Player

Chooses "abandon"

Kellen

Yes. They believed it would grow into a strong companion.

Kellen

No. They had seen how dangerous these wolves could be.

Chapter 7: Hopes Dashed

Tyr:  We've made it. That's Laaneth's house ... and it's crawling with cultists. Laaneth must be in trouble. Come on!

Player

The Player and Tyr begin to figth the cultists.

Daedric Cultist

You're too late! By now the sorceress is leagues from here.

Player

When the cultists are nearly defeated...

Daedric Cultist

Stop! We can tell you where we've taken your friend ...

Chapter 8: Swims-at-Night

Kellen

The cultists kidnapped the sorceress Laaneth, and had taken her north. They would use her to help them bring about a dread prophecy known as The Culling.

Tyr

I don't like it any more than you do. But we need a ship to chase the cultists and we don't have any coin. Besides, this ship belongs to smugglers, and I have it on good authority that—

Swims-at-Night

Intruders!

Tyr

... That they're not here tonight.

Player

The Player is forced into a fight with the bandits.

Tyr

The poison on some of their blades looks deadly. Let's try to avoid them.

Player

Suddenly...

Swims-at-Night

Who sent you?! You don't look like --

Dominion Guard

Hey! What's going on up there?

Swims-at-Night

Dominion Guards!

Kellen

The Argonian and the hero realized they had a common enemy. The smuggler, who was called Swims-at-Night, agreed to sail north in search of the sorceress.

Chapter 9: Broadsides

Swims-at-Night

Ah, I love a good storm! Makes the seafaring life interesting!

Tyr

How about pirates?

Swims-at-Night

No, they're right bastards. Treat an honest smuggler like a common merchant! (Sigh) There's no honor among scoundrels.

Swims-at-Night

I stole this cargo fair and square. Let's send these dishonorable thieves into the brine.

Pirates

Look alive men, or this storm will toss you about!

Chapter 10: Unwelcome Intrusion

Player

The pirates are defeated and the ship eventually wrecks somewhere on the coast.

Tyr

There's no sign of Laaneth. You think the crash killed them all?

Swims-at-Night

Maybe. Or maybe it was the locals.

Player

A group of Spriggan attacks the crew, and are defeated.

Kellen

As the Spriggans fell, the travelers spotted one beckoning them into the woods.

Nagh

Nagh would have followed, but mother always said this one was too curious.

Player

Chooses "follow"

Player

Chooses "loot"

Kellen

Curiosity served the travelers well. Whatever its reasons, the creature led them straight to their quarry.

Kellen

The adventurers did not trust the creature - and found a treasure it had no doubt hoped to lead them away from.

Chapter 11: Rescue

Kellen

The Cultists had taken refuge in an ancient ruin. Only to fall prey to its ferocious new inhabitants.

Tyr

Laaneth!

Laaneth

I could use a little help here.

Player

Fights the goblins that are holding Laaneth prisoner.

Laaneth

Thanks for the rescue.

Tyr

Are all the cultists dead?

Laaneth

Yes. And if we're not careful, we'll be too.

Be careful. The goblins had a powerful chief with them when I first arrived. You'd better finish off as many of them as we can before he comes back.

Kellen

Laaneth had learned that the cult was secretly led by Lord Naarifin, the Dominion warlord who had captured the Imperial City.

To bring about the prophecy, he intended to sacrifice all of the city's inhabitants.

Laaneth suggested they seek out the Imperial Army, then in exile in Skyrim, and warn the emperor of Naarifin's plot.

Chapter 12: Tangled Web

Swims-at-Night

I don't like these woods.

Tyr

This is the shortest way I know to Skyrim.

Laaneth

But not the safest.

Player

The crew is forced to fight a nest of spiders.

Kellen

In the spider's web, they found a High Elf merchant calling for help.

Isha

Did they free him? He might give away their location to the Dominion.

Nagh

This one would have taken his gold.

Player

Chooses "rob"

Player

Chooses "help"

Kellen

Just so. They relieved the merchant of his purse and continued on their way.

Kellen

The travelers would not leave him to die, whatever the risk.

Chapter 13: The Brawl

Tyr

No one in this tavern knows where the emperor's forces are camped out.

Laaneth

Or maybe the locals just aren't fond of the Imperials.

Player

A bar brawl breaks out, with our heroes caught in the middle.

Laaneth

Why are they trying to kill us? Are they assassins? Dominion operatives?

Tyr

They're Nords. This is what we do for fun.

Chapter 14: A Fractured Legion

Laaneth

If the locals weren't lying, the Legion should be nearby.

Swims-at-Night

There they are!

Tyr

Hail! I am Tyr, knight brother of the Blades.

Swims-at-Night

They don't look pleased to see us.

Imperial Deserters

We're not going back there. The Imperial Legion is doomed!

Player

The travelers are forced to fight the deserters.

Imperial Deserters

Oh no. Look-Legate Cassia's arrived! Run men!

Legate Cassia

Well, look who it is. Thanks for taking out those deserters for me, Tyr. Have you come to serve the Emperor once more?

Tyr

Cassia. We need to speak with him immediately.

Kellen

The emperor was horrified to hear of Lord Naarifin's plan. But he knew an attack on the Imperial City was doomed to fail.

Somehow the Dominion could predict his forces' every move. The hero volunteered to infiltrate the city, and discover the source of this ability.

Nagh

Was the city not guarded?

Kellen

Ah! Well, you see, Naarifin had recently reopened the Arena. The hero resolved to pose as a gladiator to gain entry. Once inside, Swims-at-Night would lead them to a secret passageway into the White-Gold Tower.

Chapter 15: Ladies and Gentlemen!

Announcer

Good people, by the grace of our liege lord Naarifin, I welcome you back to the Arena! Because nothing unites man and mer like the spectacle of glorious bloodshed!

Tyr

This is not bringing back happy memories.

Cassia

It'll be fun. Just like old times.

Announcer

Let the games begin!

Tyr

Now here we go! Let's grab some weapons off the wall and get to work!

Player

The crew defeats various combatants.

Announcer

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner. All hail the combatants from the blue team!

Swims-at-Night

Great. Let's get out of here while they're collecting their winnings.

Chapter 16: The Restless Dead

Laaneth

Are you sure these crypts will lead us right into the White-Gold Tower?

Swims-at-Night

Are you doubting the greatest smuggler in Tamriel?

Cassia

It's crawling with the undead.

Swims-at-Night

Well, if they were safe, everyone would use them.

Player

Our heroes face down progressively stronger undead.

Laaneth

I sense mystical power within that altar. Perhaps it can quiet the dead.

Player

Eventually the undead are defeated.

Kellen

Amidst the broken bones of the fallen, the hero spotted an ancient grimoire, filled with the dread secrets of necromancy.

Isha

Dared they meddle with such foul magic?

Player

Chooses "take"

Player

Chooses "destroy"

Kellen

Foul, yes... but strong. And those were dire times.

Kellen

No. Some gifts carry too terrible a price.

Interlude

Kellen

Swims-at-Night had been as good as his word. The tunnel led the adventurers straight into the White-Gold Tower.

Tyr

This must be Lord Naarifin's study.

Laaneth

Look!

The Orb of Vaermina! That's how they're tracking the army!

Tyr

Urk!

Lord Naarifin

So it is. And I'd like you to step away from it very slowly.

Laaneth

Naarifin!

Lord Naarifin

And you are the one who escaped from my temple.

Give me the orb, please... or your friend dies now.

Tyr

Don't do it!

Kellen

The hero had to make a terrible choice.

Player

Chooses "Tyr"

Player

Chooses "Orb"

Lord Naarifin

Thank you kindly.

Tyr

No!

Reive

Rraagh!

Lord Naarifin

(Gasps)

You fool!

Now you will die.

Reive

So be it!

Tyr

Aaargh!

Cassia

Tyr!

Lord Naarifin

Reive, kill them all.

Reive

With pleasure.

Chapter 17: Reive's Wrath

Player

A fight ensues between the player, their crew, and the servants of Lord Naarifin.

Reive

Lord Boethiah has granted me Goldbrand, her greatest weapon, to end your miserable life!

Player

The Player defeats Reive once again, and gains Goldbrand in the process.

Player

If the Player chose to save Tyr:

Player

If the Player chose to grab the Orb:

Cassia

He's hurt, but he'll live.

Laaneth

He's in no shape to travel.

Tyr

Leave me. You need to get back to the Emperor.

Swims-at-Night

Ever the tough guy. Come. Naarifin will have roused a hundred swords by now.

Cassia

You threw his life away! How could you?!

Laaneth

His death may already have saved thousands of lives.

Swims-at-Night

Mmmm. We have to go. Naarifin will have unleashed a hundred swords by now.

Chapter 18: A Knife in the Dark

Player

The heroes make their way back to the Emperor's camp in Skyrim.

Swims-at-Night

Look, the emperor's guards...

...someone's killed them!

Player

Bosmer assassins come out of the shadows and are defeated.

Healer

Thank the Divines. The emperor will live. Thanks to you.

Laaneth

He's in no shape to lead the assault.

Emperor

No. The troops... must believe the emperor is strong.

Stranger. You have proven a mighty warrior. Here, take my armor. In my helm, none will know who you are. Lead the battle in my stead. The fate of the Empire is in your hands.

Chapter 19: Seige of the Imperial City

Kellen

Free from prying eyes, the Imperial forces launched a surprise attack from the West, followed by a similar attack from Cheydinhal. The hero would then lead the charge to the city gates.

Laaneth

Well, in that armor you certainly look like the emperor.

Cassia

Form up on the emperor! Charge!

Alright, troops. Our job is to take that gate, and fast!

Player

The Player leads the assault on the gates of the city, disguised as the Emperor.

Cassia

We're through! Come on, we've got to find Naarifin before it's too late.

Chapter 20: The Showdown

Laaneth

Naarifin!

Lord Naarifin

Well, well. The emperor himself. Come to - what? Duel me? You think you can stop me, is that it? Fool.

Look around you! The Culling has begun. I will unleash the fires of Oblivion tonight - after I've added your body to the pyre!

Player

After a tough battle, Naarifin is defeated.

Lord Naarifin

Such might... You're not the emperor. You're the one who killed Reive!

Epilogue

Kellen

And so the city was saved.

The people hailed the emperor as a hero, little suspecting who their true savior was.

The forgotten hero quietly left the city, little realizing that even greater adventures were yet to come.

But that is a story for another evening.

Isha

How is this supposed to help us? Our warchief is dying. We need more than stories. We need-

Kellen

What you need is hope. I saw your warchief fight today in that ferocious mask of hers. As I think of it, it could have been anyone out there...

It could have been...

Isha

Me.

Kellen

Let's you and I pay our respects at the command tent. I have the strangest feeling that the warchief is about to make a miraculous recovery.
