Main Quest

Author:
Lady N

The former Blade finds themself on a path in the woods leading to what used to be their home town. The peaceful atmosphere is soon interrupted by what they see in the distance: their town is ablaze! Shortly after they encounter a Mercenary on the road.

Mercenary

Bloodfall Queen's business only.

Player

I'm going through, one way or another.

Mercenary

Have it your way.

Player

The mercenary attacks the player, who defeats him easily despite their poor equipment. Once the first mercenary has fallen, a second one runs up to join the battle. After landing some good blows, this mercenary yields to the player.

Mercenary

I surrender!

Player

Who are you?

Mercenary

Your town refused to pay taxes to the queen. We're here to collect.

Player

So you set fire to my town?

Mercenary

No, I don't know how that happened. Must have been an accident.

Player

Tell your queen to leave us alone.

Mercenary

Do you really think she listens to the likes of me?

Player

The player proceeds down the road and into the town. When they arrive the burning has stopped, but most of the buildings are smoldering runs. They are greeted near the gates by the town elder.

Junius the Elder

Say, you look very familiar. Aren't you... um... oh, it's on the tip of my tongue!

Player

The player now gets to choose their race, gender, name, and appearance.

Junius the Elder

But of course, it's you! Little [Player Name]!

Player

No one's called me "little" in a very long time...

Junius the Elder

It's been so long. Some were convinced you were dead...

Player

I joined the Imperial Legion.

Junius the Elder

With all this fighting, I imagine you must have seen some terrible things.

Player

Seen some, done even worse.

Junius the Elder

War can make monsters of the best of us. Redemption can be a long, torturous road.

Player

It's all in the past now.

Junius the Elder

You're right. We must focus on the future if we are to move past this.

Player

I went out looking for adventure.

Junius the Elder

I wish I had done so when I had the chance...

Junius the Elder

In any case, it's good that you're back. We need you.

I'm sure you have lots of questions for old Junius.

Player

What happened here?

Junius the Elder

The Bloodfall Queen sent mercenaries to collect taxes from the townsfolk.

Things escalated, and one of the men smashed the ancient statue of the town's founder.

At that point, all Oblivion broke loose...

We heard thunder, though the sky was clear, and green fire erupted from where the statue stood.

The flames spread uncontrollably, and most of the town was destroyed. My head aches at what little is left.

Player

Where is everyone?

Junius the Elder

A few people fled town when the Queen's men first arrived.

Others stayed, but were captured by the mercenaries, or were killed.

Player

The Bloodfall Queen? Who is she?

Junius the Elder

Urzoga gra-Batul. She's the Imperial vassal who rules over our small portion of the realm.

Since she inherited her grandfather's throne years ago, we've had nothing but trouble from her.

Player

What do you need me to do?

Junius the Elder

Rumor has it some townsfolk took refuge in the abandoned Highwinter Castle.

Goblins have been seen in that area. I fear our people may have been made prisoner, or worse...

Please. You may be the only one here with any chance of bringing them home.

Player

I'm only one person...

Junius the Elder

That is true. But if you don't go... Who will?

Player

I'll bring them back.

Junius the Elder

Here, take some Healing Potions. They're more useful to you than they are to me.

Best of luck, [Player Name].

Rescuing the Townfolk

Player

The secret Blade sets out to the abandoned castle to rescue the missing townsfolk. As expected, it is full of goblins. After dispatching some, they find one of the villagers in locked in a cage and release her.

Townsfolk

Thanks for saving me! I think the goblin leader still has Lond, the town blacksmith!

Player

The woman runs off to safety, and the Blade makes their way further into the dungeon, fighting rats and goblins until they locate Lond, locked in another cage. They release him.

Lond

I thought I was going to die in here!

I'm Lond, by the way, Blacksmith by trade.

See me in town if you need that sword repaired!

Player

The player heads back to town, and Junius is once again first to greet them.

Junius the Elder

You did it. I knew we could count on you.

It's good to see people returning, but now we need to take care of the town itself.

We should start with the Town Hall, right here.

It can serve as a shelter until more houses are rebuilt, and to store building materials.

Ready to rebuild the Town Hall?

Player

That sounds like a lot of work.

Junius the Elder

It is, but it's something we need to do to bring the townsfolk back.

Player

Just tell me what to do.

Junius the Elder

As it happens, you found enough lumber when you rescued those townsfolk.

We have some Limestone and Copper left, too. All together, that should be enough to rebuild the Town Hall.

Rebuilding the Town Hall

Player

Equiped with instructions from Junius, the player sets out to rebuild the town hall. The player also gets to give it a new name.

Town Hall

Here the townsfolk can organize and rebuild. The town's previous mayor died cowering in the basement of the old Town Hall when it collapsed.

After the Town Hall is rebuilt, they wander the streets for a while, observing the desolation. Near the front gate they meet Lond, the blacksmith they rescued earlier.

Lond

We're all in your debt for saving us from those goblins.

I'm much better at crafting swords than wielding them.

Player

I could teach you if you want...

Lond

Ha! Henrik, the weaponmaster, has tried to teach me to use a blade, but it proved hopeless.

Player

Henrik Seven-Swords is still alive?

Lond

Indeed. I don't think anything can kill that man. In fact, I'd be my last coin he's at the old arena, practicing as we speak.

So, do you think you can help me rebuild my smithy?

You might need some wood first, though. Perhaps you should seek out Varro and Jena Matius, the woodcutters?

The smithy used to stand on this very spot, but anywhere will do.

Lumber Run and Rebuilding the Smithy

To repair their equipment the Blade needed a smithy, and to rebuild the smithy they needed wood. So they did as Lond said and headed for the woods to find the Matiuses.

Instead of the tranquil nature they expected, they found the woods to be full of spriggans and wolves. After dispatching them all, they came across Varro Matius.

Varro Matius

Aren't you a sight for sore eyes!

I'm Varro Matius, the woodcutter.

My wife and I were separated. Please, find her and make sure she's safe!

Player

I will. What happened here?

Varro Matius

I don't know... Spriggans usually leave us along in this part of the woods. It's as if they've gone mad...

You might fare better with an axe to chop them down, though. Here, take this one.

Player

Armed with the new Iron War Axe, the player headed deeper into the woods in search of Jena. After a few more wolves and spriggans, they found her in a clearing.

Jena Matius

I was starting to worry...

I'm Jena Matius, wife of Varro.

Please, save my husband from those enraged Spriggans!

Player

I already did.

Jena Matius

Thank you, Warrior. Our lumber is yours. Please take as much as you need.

With the required wood in hand, the player returned to the town and rebuilt the smithy. Lond quickly took up his customary spot by his workbench.

Lond

Thank you so much for helping me rebuild my smithy.

Please accept these iron ingots as a show of gratitude.

Let me know if I can help you with anything.

And if you're willing to help others, you can always look up job postings on the board near the Town Hall.

Player

What do you remember about the attack?

Lond

The Queen's mercenaries didn't give us much of a chance to negotiate.

When we tried to negotiate with them, they started destroying the town.

When things began to get rough, I ran for the woods with the other villagers. As I left, I'm almost certain I heard an explosion.

Player

How were you captured?

Lond

I wanted to go back and investigate, but we were ambushed by goblins.

We didn't stand a chance.

Player

The Blade had Lond repair their gear and did a bit of trading before heading back out to town. They wanted to know more about what had happened with the Queen's mercenaries, and wanted to learn a bit more about those townsfolk that remained.

First, the player spoke to Zakana, a Redguard wandering nearby.

Player

Can you tell me what happened here?

Zakana

Of course! The Queen's men were telling us there was a price for being late on our taxes.

One broke off the head of the statue in the center of town with a big hammer, and it exploded into flames.

Player

What do you do for a living?

Zakana

I'm just a modest farmer, brave Warrior.

Player

Do you get a lot of people passing through?

Zakana

You came by, and we're certainly the better for it!

Player

After questioning people for a while, they decided to go back to the elder to see if there was anything else they could do to help.

Junius the Elder

I saw the new Smithy. It's a bit small, but it'll do. We can always improve it when we get more materials.

Other people may also need help. Check out the Job board near the Town Hall when you have time.

The woodcutters said that villagers may be help captive in Deadbrook Hollow.

That place has long been known as a hideout used by the Greencap Bandits.

I fear they may have taken advantage of the chaos and kidnapped our townsfolk.

It's probably worth looking into.

Player

I'm on my way.

Junius the Elder

Watch out for those bandits!

Player

Seems like a waste of time.

Junius the Elder

Ah, yes. I'm sure you have other matters to attend to.

The Greencap Bandits

Player

The Blade makes their way through the dungeon, dispatching bandits left and right. They come across two villagers locked in cages. While the first one just runs for their life, the second has something to say:

Townsfolk

Don't forget Saashi, the town's Loremaster! Last I saw her she was with their leader...

Here, I managed to steal this key from a drunken bandit. Maybe it'll help.

Player

The key unlocks a door nearby, and the Blade proceeds further into the castle to rescue the loremaster.

Saashi

Mmh... You do not look like one of th Bloodfall Queen's mercenaries.

Have you come to rescue Khajiit?

Player

Depends. Are you the Loremaster?

Saashi

That is what the townsfolk call this one, but Khajiit's name is Saashi.

Player

That's what I do.

Saashi

So Saashi's eyes play tricks, or are you an actual hero? A rare sight these days, indeed.

Saashi

What is your name, Warrior?

Player

My name is [Player Name].

Saashi

That is a nice name. Saashi is pleased to meet you, [Player Name].

Player

We don't really have time for this right now.

Saashi

Oh, all right.

Saashi

Many thanks, [Player Name]. Saashi is in your debt.

Please, come visit Saashi back in [Town Name]!

Player

Returning to town, the player is once again greeted by Junius.

Junius the Elder

You brought our people back, safe and sound. We are in your debt, [Player Name].

I'm truly grateful to you for rescuing Saashi. She's been like a daughter to me.

No one has ever shared my love for this own and its history as she does.

She was studying the Founder's statue in the town square when we were attacked. I didn't dare think of what might have happened to her.

That reminds me. Some of the villagers found what appear to be tunnels under the ruins of the statue.

You should go tell Saashi about the tunnels. I'm sure she'll be intrigued.

Player

That seemed like a good idea. The Blade spotted Saashi near the front gate and headed over.

Saashi

Saashi is saddened by the devastation here.

The founder's statue that got destroyed... Did you know it was created back in the first era?

Why would anyone destroy such an ancient artifact?

Player

Maybe the answer is in the tunnels below the town...

Saashi

Tunnels? What tunnels?

Player

The villagers found them while clearing out the rubble.

Saashi

Those galleries were likely build by the ancient Ayleids themselves!

We have to go down there to see what we can find.

Player

I'll go first, and make sure it's safe.

Saashi

Yes, that's probably for the best!

Player

Let me know what's down there.

Saashi

Perhaps [Player Name] could go first? Just... Just in case.

Hidden Mysteries

Player

The player jumped in the hole left by the destroyed statue and headed into the Ayleid ruins. They were expansive and deep, filled with skeletons and wights which the player quickly dispatched. At the very end of the ruins, they found a burial chamber with an empty sarcophagus, and, on the other side of the room, an ornate Crypt Door. It could not be unlocked, however.

The player headed back up to tell Saashi about their discovery.

Saashi

So, what did you find?

Player

An ancient tomb, lots of undead, and an empty sarcophagus.

Saashi

An... Ayleid sarcophagus?

Player

Looked pretty old, but it was opened only recently.

Saashi

It is possible there was some sort of warding enchantment on the statue.

Destroying the statue would have broken the spell, and released whatever was trapped in there.

That would explain the burst of magick energy that people witnessed.

Saashi will see for herself to find out more. Now that it is safe.

By the way, old Henrik Seven-Swords was looking for you earlier. You should seek him out near the West Gate.

Player

The player headed that way.

Henrik Seven-Swords

An informant tells me there are some of the Bloodflall Queen's mercenaries near Falcon Hills Deep.

I've also been told their association with the Queen may be at an end.

Player

This informat sure has a lot to tell.

Henrik Seven-Swords

Oh, yes. He's quite talkative.

Care to pay these thugs a visit? You may have to kill a few to loosen their tongues.

Player

I think I will...

Player

I'll consider it.

Henrik Seven-Swords

Let me know if my informant was right.

Mercenaries on the Run

Player

Quite mad at the mess the mercenaries have caused, the player heads into the woods to check in on them. The player takes out a few before arriving in a small village camp and locating their leader, who is looking for conversation rather than a fight.

Mercenary

Who are you, and what was all that noise?

Player

That was me teaching your men a lesson.

Mercenary

Wait, hold on... Maybe we can talk this through.

Player

Tell me about the attack on my town.

Mercenary

The Queen told us to just scare the townsfolk into paying up. Nothing more.

I have no idea how the fire started; it must've been an accident. The Queen was furious about it. I swear, that's the truth.

Wights and skeletons have been hounding us ever since, roaming outside the Queen's castle.

We weren't hired to fight the undead, so many of us just left.

There's always money to be made with the Greencap Bandits, anyway.

Player

You're nothing but a bunch of cowards.

Mercenary

Call me a coward all you want. I get to live to see another day, and that's what counts.

Player

Get out of here before I change my mind.

Mercenary

Good luck, Warrior, you'll need it!

Player

You don't deserve to live.

When the player returns to town, they head straight for Henrik.

Henrik Seven-Swords

So, did you learn anything?

Player

The Bloodfall Queen has an undead problem.

Henrik Seven-Swords

Well, that's some sort of poetic justice, I guess.

Player

With that out of the way, the Blade wanted to get back to Saashi and exploring the underground ruins. He found the Loremaster near the ruins of the old statue.

Saashi

Ah, [Player Name]! Saashi has made much progress regarding the Ayleid crypt under the town.

First, Saashi learned who was buried in the tomb. An ancient Ayleid Sorcerer-King, ruler over these lands back in the First Era.

Little is known of him. His successor went to great lengths to have him erased from historical records.

Saashi could not even learn his name. It seems, though, that he was a powerful necromancer. That... might explain why the tomb is empty...

Player

Interesting, anything else?

Saashi

But this, this is exciting: inspecting the burial chamber, Saashi found a secret lever that opened the large door.

There is a whole other section of the tomb to explore!

Saashi hopes to find more about the identity of the Sorcerer-King in the unexplored chambers.

Player

You're right, I'll go.

Saashi

Saashi will accompany you, show you the door that opened.

Player

Let me know what you find.

The Name of Evil

Player

The player descended down into the ruins beneath the town, followed by Saashi. Together they made their way down to the main burial chamber, and Saashi pointed out the newly opened door.

Saashi

Saashi stumbled upon a door, and seems to have found a whole other section to the tomb.

This appears to lead to the entrance of the tomb. Saashi believes we arrived at the end, if that makes sense.

Is [Player Name] ready to see what is out there?

Player

I wanted to ask you something...

Saashi

What is it?

Player

Why don't you speak like most Khajiit?

Saashi

Ah, that. Saashi left Elsweyr when she was very young.

Saashi grew up in Skyrim. Speech patterns are difficult to learn, and while Saashi has tried, she has had limited success.

Player

Satisfied with the little history about their companion, the Blade headed down into the tomb. Inside, they fought the typical array of wights, skeletons, and spiders. After a while, they arrive in a new room, where they find an inscribed stone tablet. They pocket it and return to the surface to show Saashi what they've found.

Saashi

[Player Name], you are back! Did you find anything new down there?

Player

I found these inscribed stone tablets.

Saashi

You did? Wonderful! They must have quite the story to tell... Saashi will begin deciphering them right away.

In the meantime, perhaps [Player Name] could ask the Town Elder if he needs anything? Dear old Junius is too proud to ask for help.

The Bloodfall Queen

Junius the Elder

Saashi told me of what you discovered beneath the town's statue.

We all knew it was old, but I'd never have dreamed it could date back to the First Era.

Could there be a link between what you've found, and the recent undead sightings?

Player

It's possible.

Junius the Elder

As if we weren't suffering enough with the Bloodfall Queen's men hounding us.

Do you think you could speak to her? Find a way to placate her?

Player

I'll get her to leave us alone..

Junius the Elder

Thank the Divines for you, [Player Name]

Player

I'm not sure that's the best use of my time.

Player

The Blade was eager to meet with this Bloodfall Queen, and headed out into the woods beyond the town towards her castle. They met a variety of undead as they approached her hold, including a lich guarding the cavern that was the castle's back entrance.

Once inside, the Blade found themselves in a modest throne room guarded by Mercenaries. The queen was on the second story near her throne, alongside two of her lieutenants, who the Blade chose to speak with first. One was a Breton in a mage's gear, and the other an Argonian in armor.

Edrien Geornis

I am Edrien, the Queen's mage and counselor.

We've heard some unsettling rumors about you, Warrior.

Player

They're all true.

Player

Don't believe everything you hear.

Edrien Geornis

True. I imagine there are some rumors about myself I'd find less than flattering.

Edrien Geornis

Do you have any questions for me?

Player

Where are you from?

Edrien Geornis

I am from the city of Camlorn, on the western coast of High Rock.

I arrived a few years ago, seeking a fair and just monarchy to serve. Fortunately, I found such a ruler here.

Player

What do you think caused the town fire?

Edrien Geornis

Ah, yes. A terrible tragedy, certainly. As to what caused it, it's hard for me to say.

It sounds like some sort of magical enchantment which released its energy when the statue was damaged.

However, it's unlikely that the incident has anything to do with our undead troubles.

Player

Satisfied with the lieutenant's answers, the Blade spoke to the Queen herself.

The Bloodfall Queen

So, you're the one they call [Player Name]? The one who's been killing my men?

Player

Your men aren't worth the coin you paid for them.

Player

Yes, I am.

The Bloodfall Queen

You admit to your crimes, then?

Player

I acted only in my defense, and that of my town.

The Bloodfall Queen

So, you say you're from here, then? How is it that we've never met?

Player

Your grandfather was still king when I left.

The Bloodfall Queen

I see. Well, my grandfather could count on loyal soldiers to defend his realm.

Most of them died with him during the Great War, fighting for an Empire that has never given much of a damn about us.

I am forced to rely on mercenaries who are willing to work for a pittance, which is all I can afford.

With these, I have to defend the realm against constant attacks from Greencap Bandits.

And now, it seems we also need to fight goblins and the undead. All of that costs money... a lot of money.

When a town doesn't pay, I must act. That said, the fire was a complete accident. I never told anyone to break the statue.

For that, I am truly sorry.

Player

I accept your appology.

Player

I'll help you deal with your foes.

Player

You can add "regicide" to the list.

The Bloodfall Queen

Thank you, [Player Name]. Wanum here will accompany you back to your town and serve as my emissary.

You must have more questions for me...

Player

Did your men find anything in that statue?

The Bloodfall Queen

My men brought back some enchanted stones and an ancient scroll, which they found inside the destroyed statue.

Do you think the undead might be after these artifacts? Should we get rid of them?

Player

No, let's see if they come back first.

When did the undead attack start?

Player

Tell me more about those bandits.

The Bloodfall Queen

The Greencaps were always a thorn in my grandfather's side, but lately they've become even more aggressive.

Player

Any idea where their base is?

The Bloodfall Queen

If we did, there would be no problem. Maybe you can discover where they hide.

Player

Tell me more about those goblins.

The Bloodfall Queen

There's been an increase in Goblin attacks over the past few months... could be due to a harsh winter, or overpopulation. Hard to tell.

There is an imperial envoy in your town, Gaius Platorius. He can tell you more about them.

Player

What happened to your father?

The Bloodfall Queen

I do not speak of him. Never mention him again.

Player

Okay, I won't.

The Bloodfall Queen

Keep Wanum up to date with any new information. He will relay it to me. Take care, [Player Name].

You are dismissed.

Player

The Blade and Wanum headed back into town. Once there, the Blade reported the new development to Junius.

Junius the Elder

So, did you talk to the Queen? How did it go?

Player

We made a deal.

Junius the Elder

You did? What did you offer her?

Player

My help fighting her enemies.

Junius the Elder

Well done, [Player Name]. I knew you'd settle the matter.

We can all breathe a little easier now that you've convinced the Queen to back off.

Saashi tells me she managed to translate those tablets you found.

You should consult her. She seems very excited.

Bloodfall Banner

The Batul family has been ruling this small kingdom for three generations. Officially part of the Empire, it is generally paid little attention by the Emperor, who has yet to visit the region.

Player

Saashi was back at the main gate, so the Blade headed there. The Khajiit did indeed look very excited.

Saashi

Good news! This one managed to learn the name of the Sorcerer-King: Celemaril Light-Bringer.

Player

That doesn't sound so bad...

Saashi

Not sure his people agreed with that. His own brother, Valentis, lead a rebellion against him.

He and the other Ayleid kings managed to stop the Sorcerer-King and bind him magically.

Saashi is fairly certain the statue destroyed by the Queen's men was of Valentis.

This one has found Valentis' final resting place. Perhaps there are runic inscriptions in the burial chamber...

Up for a bit of tomb robbing?

Player

I'm on it.

Saashi

Good. Saashi cannot wait to see what there is to be found.

Player

Not right now.

A Tale of Two Brothers

Player

They headed back into the ruins beneath town, ready to find some answers.

Saashi

This tomb looks a lot like the Sorcerer-King's, does it not?

It does make sense. They were built during the same era, probably by the same architects.

It certainly is just as... creepy.

Player

I take it you'll wait here?

Player

You stay here, it's safer.

Saashi

Khajiit is sorry. This one knows you take all the risks... but Saashi is a scholar, not a fighter.

Saashi will follow from a distance, and meet [Player Name] in the burial chamber.

Player

Although this tomb really was a lot like the other, one element was different: as they walked forward, the Blade noticed a ghostly figure running away from them into the dungeon depths. They followed this apparition as it unlocked doors, seemingly showing them the way.

After dispatching a lot of wights, skeletons, spiders, and even a troll, the Blade and Saashi finally arrived in Valentis' burial chamber. On the far wall was a magnificent golden mural.

Saashi

You did it, [Player Name], you found Valentis' burial chamber.

This mural, it's... mesmerizing. Look, there's the Sorcerer-King!

And this relates how Valentis fought back his brother's undead forces.

Here he is shown binding the Sorcerer-King in his tomb... somehow.

Let's copy those runes and go... I feel like someone's watching us.

Player

Together, they head back up to town.

Saashi

That was quite the adventure, was it not?

Player

Nothing we couldn't handle.

Saashi

This one had time to look over the tablets while we were traveling back here.

As suspected, it is a retelling of the struggle between the Sorcerer-King, his brother, and their allies.

In the end the brother prevailed, but regrettably, Saashi cannot decipher the last sentence.

Player

So, what now?

Saashi

Khajiit knows of a scholar who may be able to help.

His name is Talerendil, an expert in the ancient Ayleid language.

He's currently studying in some old ruins not too far from here.

You should seek him out at once!

Player

Sounds like a plan.

Saashi

Excellent. Saashi is sure he will be able to help.

Player

I have other things to do first.

Secrets of the Ayleids

Player

The Blade headed out for yet another Ayleid ruins. This one was full of both undead and necromancers. At the very end, they found Telarendil cornered by two skeletons. The Blade dispatched them before they could do any damage.

Talerendil

Thank you for rescuing me! Are you also a student of ancient history?

Player

You could say I've recently become one.

Talerendil

Wonderful! The past has so many great lessons to teach us, don't you agree?

Player

I do, and I think you can help me with that.

Talerendil

I can? How?

Player

Never cared much for it.

Player

Can you translate this stone tablet?

Talerendil

Where did you get this?

Player

I recovered it from an Ayleid tomb.

Talerendil

Ah, yes. That would explain the various references to their burial rituals.

Let's see. Hm... Yes, definitely ancient Ayleid written here. Wait, what's this? Celemaril the Sorcerer-King? Fascinating!

This describes his rise to power, his conquest of Tamriel and his defeat by his brother Valentis. Amazing!

It seems the victors of that conflict erased his name from history. That explains why so little is known of him.

Player

Does it say *how* they defeated him?

Talerendil

Let me see... it mentions Valentis using some kind of scroll to bind Celemaril under a statue.

Player

That must be the one the Queen's men took.

Talerendil

Now, this is interesting... the author describes the scroll as ancient, even for the Ayleid civilization.

My goodness. I... I think this may be referring to an Elder Scroll.

Player

I thought those were all in the Imperial Library?

Talerendil

Well, that's what it says...

Player

I need to go back home right now.

Talerendil

I'm coming with you! This is a major discovery!

Player

The two of them hurried back to town. Saashi greeted the Blade as soon as they arrived.

Saashi

Ah, you have returned! And with a translation of the runes, no less. Please, allow Saashi a look...

Oh. Oh my... Could this possibly be correct? There was actually an Elder Scroll in that statue?!

Player

That's what it says, anyway.

Saashi

An Elder Scroll... Right here... The implications of this are... enormous!

This one needs some time to... fully comprehend what all this means...

Also, [Player Name] should know that a group of Thalmor have arrived in town.

They are questioning everyone in their typically unpleasant way.

Player

What are they asking?

Saashi

Apparently they are looking for some sort of criminal or murderer. This one lacks those details.

They will probably want to talk to you, too. Their leader's name is Aranande. They are... difficult to miss.

Player

Not quite ready to meet the Thalmor, the Blade decided to chat with Saashi some more.

Saashi

What's on [Player Name]'s mind?

Player

Wondering about the Bloodfall Queen and the scroll.

Saashi

Khajiit is calm now. This one regrets losing her composure, but... an Elder Scroll...

Player

It has to be the scroll the Queen's men found.

Saashi

If that is the case, we absolutely need to make sure the Sorcerer-King does not get his hands on it!

That would explain why the queen is being raided by undead. We have to get it back!

Player

She might give it to us if I ask her.

Saashi

Are you two on friendly terms now, or perhaps this one has missed something?

Player

It's nothing like that.

Saashi

Well, you should definitely ask her then.

Player

Any idea how?

Player

Thinking of the Sorcerer-King gathering his forces.

Saashi

If the Sorcerer-King is back, then he is likely gathering forces somewhere.

We need to find his lair and figure out what we are up against.

We need to ask around town. Perhaps someone has heard of undead attacks in the region.

Player

I'll get right to it.

Saashi

Good. Let this one know as soon as you hear something.

Player

The Blade had fought their share of undead all around town, and thus was rather sceptical about finding a fast and easy answer. They decided to go around and ask everyone in town for their best haunted dungeon rumors.

Constantia Galena

You look concerned... what's on your mind?

Player

I'm trying to figure out where the undead are coming from.

Constantia Galena

Have you checked out Hangman's Wood? It's rumored to be haunted.

Anyway, if I was trying to find the undead, that'd be the first place I'd look.

Guthrum of the Isles

I heard you are asking about Undead sightings.

Player

Do you know anything about it?

Guthrum of the Isles

Death is the natural order of things. Those who choose undeath are placing themselves outside of the Divines' light.

Arkay, Lord of the Wheel of Life, stands against these abominations. Perhaps if you pray to him you'll find what you seek.

I offer you the wisdom of the Eight.

Player

Wasn't it the Nine?

Guthrum of the Isles

The worship of Talos is now forbidden, leaving on the Eight true gods.

But I do not judge those who still *privately* count him as one of the Nine.

Wanum

Can I help you with anything, dryskin?

Player

Heard anything about undead sightings in the region?

Wanum

You mean apart from the attacks on our stronghold? Hmmm, let me think...

Fort Cassynder has been considered haunted for as long as I can remember it. Maybe you should try there.

Sirfing

Ask that Dunmer traveling merchant next time he's in town. I'm certain he'll have the information you need.

Player

That sounded promising, and the merchant happened to be in town, so that's where the Blade headed next.

Arven Dalas

Greetings, valuable customer! I bring you wares from across Tamriel.

As an archeologist, I often stumble across priceless ancient relics.

Would you like to see them? They could be yours... for a price.

Player

I thought you said they were priceless?

Arven Dalas

Well, a mer has to make a living, doesn't he?

Player

Archeologist? Don't you mean grave robber?

Arven Dalas

Potayto, potahto.

Arven Dalas

So? Interested?

Player

Maybe later.

What do you know about the attack on this town?

Arven Dalas

Rumor has it the Bloodfall Queen razed the place as a penalty for not paying taxes on time.

I'm sure other towns in the area will hurry up to pay what they owe!

Too bad about the statue, though. it's been here for ages.

Player

Where do your travels take you?

Arven Dalas

Mostly to Morrowind and back, though now that the Great War's over I may travel further west.

War may be good business for some, but not for me.

Player

Since the traveling merchant had nothing to say about the undead at this time, the Blade continued with the regular townfolk.

Sorine Vien

Maybe those Thalmor have heard something? They have ears everywhere.

Varro Matius

Well, my cousin Nazarius did say something about scared half to death by walking skeletons.

He was checking out an Ironwood patch near the Howling Caves.

Player

The rest of the townsfolk had nothing new to say, so the Blade decided that those four locations were their best bet.

The Missing Scroll

Player

Before exploring all those locations, the Blade decided to try to get the Elder Scroll from the Bloodfall Queen. Once again, they had to fight their way through a bevy of undead, this time accompanied by necromancers.

None of that stopped them however, and they soon arrived back at the Queen's castle.

Urzoga Gra-Batul

Ah, my favorite new subject. Did you run into more undead on your way here?

Player

Worse than that: necromancers.

Urzoga Gra-Batul

Death mages have been outlawed for centuries! I will not tolerate their presence in my realm now.

Player

I'm not your subject.

Urzoga Gra-Batul

As a citizen of my realm, you are my subject whether you like it or not.

Player

They're after the scroll your men took.

Urzoga Gra-Batul

The scroll that was inside of that statue? So, there really *was* something special about it, then?

Unfortunately someone stole it from us. What's so special about it?

Player

We believe it's an Elder Scroll.

Urzoga Gra-Batul

An Elder Scroll? Are you sure?

I wish you had told me before our mage left yesterday to go after the thieves. I haven't heard from him since, and now fear the worst.

These necromancers must be responsible for the recent plague of undead. Could they use this scroll to cause even more mayhem?

Player

There's no telling what they could do with it.

Urzoga Gra-Batul

I'll send word for you if my mage comes back with any information. Thank you for your services, [Player Name].

Player

The Blade made it back to town to report what had happened to Saashi.

Saashi

You have returned! So? How did it go?

Player

Someone stole the Scroll from them.

Saashi

Hmm. Saashi assumed as much.

Player

We were attacked by necromancers.

Saashi

Well, now it is known where the undead are coming from.

Saashi

It is safe to assume the Sorcerer-King has the scroll, or will have it soon.

We need to find the Lich's lair and do some reconnaissance around it.

The Lair of the Sorcerer-King

Player

The Blade now had four likely locations for the lich's lair: Hangman's Wood, the Ayleid ruins of Niryastare, the Howling Caves, and Fort Cassynder. After telling Saashi about each one, they chose to begin exploring.

Hangman's Wood seemed like a good place to start. But it proved a dead end, with tons of wolves, trolls, and spriggans, but no ancient Ayleid liches. They returned to town to tell Saashi about their failure.

Saashi

Did you find the Lich in Hangman's Wood?

Player

No, just spriggans and trolls.

Saashi

Perhaps this will not be as easy as Saashi thought...

Player

Fort Cassynder was the next stop. Inside the Blade found tons of mercenaries apparently turned bandit, but once again no undead.

Saashi

How did it go at Fort Cassynder?

Player

The Lich wasn't there.

Saashi

Saashi supposes we will just have to keep looking.

Player

Up next, the Howling Caves. Again, the Blade found nothing of interest.

Saashi

So? Was it the Howling Caves?

Player

No. And they weren't howling.

Saashi

Saashi sometimes wonders how these places come by such names.

Player

Finally, the player explored the ruins of Niryastare. Although they were Ayleid just like the Lich, the lich was not inside.

Saashi

Was there anything in the ruins of Niryastare?

Player

Some undead, but no Liches.

Saashi

Just our luck...

Ah, but this reminds me. The traveling Dunmer merchant, Arven Dalas, is back in town.

If anyone knows what is going on in the realm, it is him!

Player

I'll ask him if he's heard about this.

The player headed back to Arven.

What have you heard about undead sightings?

Arven Dalas

I've heard a lot about Drachurst Keep these past few days.

It was rumored to be haunted, but now people are speaking of seeing wights within its walls.

Player

This sounded promising, so the Blade headed back to confer with Saashi.

The traveling merchant says he's heard strange screams coming from Drachurst Keep.

Saashi

He has? We should go! Rather... Saashi means [Player Name] should go.

Player

I'm on my way.

Player

I'll get around to it.

Saashi

Saashi has a good feeling about this one...

Player

The Blade did, too. After a short stroll through the forest they entered Drachurst Keep. It was indeed haunted, which was a good start. At the very end of the castle dungeons, they encountered a powerful Ayleid lich, hovering over a dais with the Elder Scroll.

It took some work, but the Blade finally managed to vanquish him. They retrieved the scroll from the platform and headed back to town.

Saashi

See? Khajiit knew this was the right one!

And you found the Elder Scroll, too! That is amazing!

Saashi must admit, it is tempting to open it and peek inside..

Player

Won't you go blind?

Saashi

You are probably right... It might be worth it, though.

Player

Let's deal with the Sorcerer-King first.

Saashi

You are right. The secrets of the universe will have to wait.

Saashi

Now that you have recovered the Elder Scroll, it is only a matter of time before the Sorcerer-King comes to take it back.

Player

It'll take some time before he's ready.

Player

What should we do next?

Saashi

We need to move quickly. This town cannot withstand an undead assault.

Saashi once met someone while traveling... They might know how to use the Elder Scroll against the Sorcerer-King.

You might not be too keen on talking to him, though.

Player

Why is that?

Saashi

Well... he is a dragon. Shulkunaak. This one recognized his name in those runic inscriptions.

Player

You met a dragon?

Saashi

It is a long story. But Saashi promises to tell once this is all over.

This one believes he can help figure it out. If he does not kill you first, that is.

Player

All right, let's go then.

Saashi

Saashi will start packing.

Player

I need to think about it.

Saashi

This one understands, but... it may be our only hope at this point.

Facing the Dragon

Player

Together, Saashi and the Blade set out for a cavern where the Dragon was said to reside.

Saashi

The dragon Shulkunaak should be somewhere in this cave complex.

Just please, be respectful when you meet him. This one would be very sad if he ended up eating you.

Player

The cave was populated by a variety of spiders and bears. After defeating them all, the Blade discovered the dragon napping in a large chamber at the cave's end.

Shulkunaak

Who dares disturb my peace? Speak, volaan. Your life hangs in the balance.

Player

I am [Player Name], and I seek your wisdom.

Shulkunaak

You came here alone? That was very brave, or very stupid.

Player

I'm not afraid of you.

Shulkunaak

Stupidity it is, then. If it is death you seek, I will give it to you.

Player

I trust your good judgement with my life.

Shulkunaak

Ahkrin - bravery - may impress your peers. All it will earn you here is a quick death.

Player

I am [Player Name], and I don't fear you!

Shulkunaak

Do you think it wise to provoke me, here in my own lair?

Player

I see no other option for a coward like you.

Shulkunaak

Do not think you can provoke me that easily. But I admire your bravado.

Player

I am told dragons appreciate confidence.

Shulkunaak

Your ahkrin - bravery - has earned my respect. But that will not save your life.

Shulkunaak

But first, tell me. Why did you come all the way here to die?

Player

The Sorcerer-king Celemaril has returned.

Here, the story splits into two parts - one where the Blade speaks to the dragon to get their answers, and another where they must first defeat him in combat. Due to length, they are presented in separate sections.

Talking to the Dragon

Shulkunaak

So the rumors are true. Krosis sul! I hoped this day would never come. You seek my help, then.

Player

You're the only one who can help.

Shulkunaak

Very well. Celemaril must not achieve his goals. The world cannot be destroyed just yet.

Shulkunaak

Know this: the Sorcerer-King is immortal. Simply destroying his physical form will not kill him.

Player

So, he cannot be defeated?

Shulkunaak

You need to bind his spirit first. But that will not be easy to accomplish.

Player

What do we need?

Shulkunaak

Have you already found the Elder Scroll?

Player

We have.

Shulkunaak

The Kel, the Elder Scroll, can affect all possible futures. you must bind the Sorcerer-King to the one where he fails to escape.

You will also need the incantation that was used to bind his spirit in ancient times.

Defeat Celemaril in combat. A pure heard must read the incantation while wearing his lost crown.

Celemaril's ancient crown is another matter. I do not know where it may now be found.

Player

That's it?

Shulkunaak

Yes. That should not be too hard for you, kendov.

Player

Thank you for your help, great Shulkunaak.

Shulkunaak

Do not thank me yet. Now you must prove yourself worthy to face the Sorcerer-King.

Player

It doesn't have to be this way.

Shulkunaak

There is no evading your duty, Blade.

Player

Me, a Blade?!

Player

Is it that obvious?

Shulkunaak

Zu'u ni mey. I did not survive this long without knowing a Blade when I see one.

Have the Blades forgotten their sworn duty as dragonslayers? I assure you, I have not.

Player

I don't care, this is unfair.

Shulkunaak

Fairness is irrelevant. Either you are a [man/woman] of honor, and you fight.

Or you are not honorable, and I kill you.

Now honor your comrades, and fight me! Aav grah!

Player

Very well.

Shulkunaak

I knew you were a [man/woman] of honor. Aav grah!

Player

Not if I kill you first.

Shulkunaak

Aav grah! Let us test ourselves against each other, [Player Name]!

Player

The player and Shulkunaak fight. Though the blade is powerful, the dragon is much more so. Eventually the Blade manages to damage the dragon enough to force a dialog.

Shulkunaak

Enough. You have proven your worth.

Drem wah hi. Go in peace, Blade.

Player

You have my gratitude, and that of my town.

Shulkunaak

None of that will matter until you use it to stop Celemaril. Kfir voth ahkrin.

Fighting the Dragon

Shulkunaak

So the rumors are true. Krosis sul! I hoped this day would never come. You seek my help, then.

Player

Yes, and you'll tell me, or else!

Shulkunaak

You choose death, then. Ol hi hind. So be it.

Player

The player and Shulkunaak fight. Though the blade is powerful, the dragon is much more so. Eventually the Blade manages to damage the dragon enough to force a dialog.

Shulkunaak

You have defeated me. I am gronsezin - honor-bound - to tell you what you need to know.

Player

Tell me what we need to defeat the Sorcerer-king.

Shulkunaak

I will tell you what you need to know.

Player

That's it?

Shulkunaak

I have told you everything I know. The rest is up to you.

Player

The two paths converge here.

Injured and exhausted, the Blade makes their way back to the cavern entrance and relays the events to Saashi.

Saashi

[Player Name], you have returned!

Player

I have, and I know how to beat the Sorcerer-King.

Player

You sound surprised.

Saashi

Surprised? Of... Of course not. Saashi is simply relieved to see [Player Name] in one piece, and... well, relatively unburnt.

So, how did it go? Did you kill the dragon? How big was he? Did he tell you how to defeat the Sorcerer-King?

Player

Whoa, easy... I'll tell you all on the way back.

Saashi

Yes, apologies. Saashi is excited. Let us return home.

Player

They made their way back to the town without further incident.

Saashi

This one still cannot believe you were able to defeat Shulkunaak.

Player

Now we know how to bind the Sorcerer-King.

Saashi

You are right, of course. At least now we have a fighting chance.

Player

I never thought I'd fight a real dragon.

Saashi

Sad to think he might be the last of his kind, too.

Saashi

Also, this one *may* have overheard [Player Name]'s conversation with Shulkunaak...

Player

You did?

Saashi

Saashi will keep your secret safe.

Player

Thank you, I appreciate it.

Saashi

You should go talk to Junius, he wanted to talk to you about rebuilding the founder's statue...

Finding all that is needed to defeat the Sorcerer-King is going to be a challenge.

Saashi does not know where to find the ritual incantation. [Player Name] will have to ask around.

Player

All right, I'll do that.

Saashi

Saashi may know someone who could help with the crown, though. His name is M'jaddah.

He is an expert in ancient Ayleid artifacts. A treasure hunter.

Player

Can we trust him?

Saashi

If we have coin, he will help us.

Player

Where do you know him from?

Saashi

He is actually a cousin of Saashi's. Twice removed.

Saashi

This one is unsure of who else could help at this point.

Player

Okay, I'll go see him.

Player

Let's wait a bit on that.

Saashi

Do keep an eye on your valuables while you are there...

The Treasure Hunter

Player

They headed off into the countryside to look for the treasure hunter.

M'jaddah

Hello there! You are [Player Name], yes? This one is known as M'jaddah, famous treasure hunter and adventurer.

Player

Never heard of this one.

M'jaddah

Well... "famous" is perhaps premature. But M'jaddah will earn that title in time.

Saashi sent word that you search for something very special. Something rare, and ancient.

M'jaddah thinks you will be pleasantly surprised to see what he has discovered.

Player

You found Celemaril's crown?

Player

I know who you are.

M'jaddah

Saashi sent word to M'jaddah that you were coming, that you were looking for something special.

She said it was something unique, and very old, yes?

Player

Did she, now?

M'jaddah

M'jaddah will show you, yes?

Player

M'jaddah runs off, forcing the Blade to follow. Wolves and necromancers get in the way. Eventually, the Blade catches up to the Khajiit in some ruins far inside the forest.

M'jaddah

Please do not hurt M'jaddah! They left him no choice!

Player

Give me one good reason not to kill you.

M'jaddah

Err... M'jaddah's adorably roguish personality?

Player

Wrong answer.

M'jaddah

Wait, M'jaddah knows where the ancient Ayleid crown is!

Player

M'jaddah better start talking, then.

M'jaddah

It is in a remote cave, guarded by one of the most terrifying monsters ever to walk Tamriel. M'jaddah swears this is the truth!

Khajiit promises to give directions if his life is spared!

Player

What about those necromancers?

M'jaddah

They knew you were coming to see M'jaddah. They have been watching you through a spy.

Player

A spy? Who is it?

M'jaddah

M'jaddah heard something about the Queen's mage. That is all that is known, M'jaddah swears!

Player

All right, you'll live...for now.

M'jaddah

Thank you, kind [Player Name]. M'jaddah will not forget this!

Player

The Blade returned to town, leaving M'jaddah to his own devices. Things had gotten even more complicated. As usual, Saashi greeted them by the gate.

Saashi

How did it go?

Player

I managed to get the info.

Saashi

Well, that is what matters, yes?

Player

I walked right into a trap!

Saashi

This one is sorry about that. My cousin never was very... trustworthy.

Saashi

At least now we can figure out where to go next!

Player

Also, the Queen's mage is a necromancer spy.

Saashi

Really? We should probably warn her about that...

High Treason

Player

The Blade chose to go tell the Bloodfall Queen about the traterous Necromancer in her court. As usual, they had to defeat a wealth of undead to get to her castle.

Urzoga Gra-Batul

Ah, [Player Name]. I didn't expect you so soon. How goes your quest?

Player

I have some...troubling news.

Urzoga Gra-Batul

It is not like you to hold out like this. Speak freely.

Player

There is a traitor in your midst.

Urzoga Gra-Batul

A traitor? Who would dare to betray me?

Player

Your mage, it seems.

Player

Your mage is a necromancer.

Urzoga Gra-Batul

Edrien?!

Edrien, what do you have to say to this accusation?

Player

Both the Blade and the Bloodfall Queen approach the nearby mage. Urzoga draws her sword in preparation.

Edrien Geornis

My queen! Don't believe these lies! I have always been your loyal subject!

Player

Save your breath, necromancer!

Edrien Geornis

Curse you, Warrior! Curse you to Oblivion!

With that, Edrien turned and ran, escaping through a secret passage in the back wall of the castle. The player followed. Inside, they found and defeated two skeletons before turning their attention back to the mage.

Edrien Geornis

No, wait, don't kill me! I can help you!

Player

Better make it good.

Edrien Geornis

I could tell you the secret to eternal life, how to remain healthy and strong without effort!

Player

Why don't I just turn you over to the Queen?

Edrien Geornis

She'll torture me!

Player

See? Maybe you can be of use after all.

Edrien Geornis

You'll regret this, [Player Name]! The Sorcerer-king will feast on your soul!

Urzoga Gra-Batul

Thank you, [Player Name]. Once again, I am indebted to you.

This traitor will tell us everything, don't worry. I will keep you informed of what I learn from him.

May the Divines smile upon you.

The Ayleid Crown

Player

Their duty done, the Blade headed out to recover the ancient Ayelid crown. The Blade made their way to the Lost Caverns, where it was said to reside. They defeated a variety of undead enemies, and finally found the crown resting on a dias in the deepest depths of the dungeon. They shoved it into their pack and headed back to town.

The Lost Ritual

Next, the Blade chose to pursue finding the incantation. With no good leads to go on, they chose to ask people throughout the town.

Player

I'm looking for an expert in Ayleid ritual magic.

Townsfolk

There was an old enchanter who was an expert on ancient magic, but he went into hiding after the worship of Talos was outlawed.

Townsfolk

I'm really sorry, I don't know anything about that.

Townsfolk

Do I look like a mage?!

Townsfolk

You sound just like that daft enchanter who disappeared months ago. Probably dead by now.

Player

I'm looking for an ancient Ayleid incantation.

Girthum of the Isles

The Ayleids worshipped demons. Trying to follow in their footsteps will only lead you into darkness and despair.

You would do better to abandon such pursuits and dedicate yourself to the study of sacred texts.

Townsfolk

An old enchanter who may have been able to help used to live here, but he's gone. Hopefully you'll be able to find him.

Player

This enchanter sounded promising, but no one had any good leads on him. After questioning all the locals, the Blade's last resort were the Thalmor representatives in town.

Thalmor Agent

How is your quest to defeat the Sorcerer-king going?

Player

We're trying to find an ancient Ayleid incantation.

Thalmor Agent

Hmm. We may be able to help you on this.

I've learned of an old enchanter called Martin Gavinius who is an expert on ancient Ayleid magic.

He may know something of use to you.

Player

Do you know where to find him?

Thalmor Agent

I do. I want you to kill this unrepentant Talos worshiper once he's given you what you want.

Do you have a problem with that?

Player

Nope.

Thalmor Agent

Excellent. Here are the directions to where he lives.

Be careful, though. There's a reason this sly old man is still alive...

Player

I'll have to think about it.

Thalmor Agent

Suit yourself. You know where to find me, [Player Name]...

The Old Enchanter

Player

Without anything else to go on, the Blade accepted the Thalmor's help and headed for the old Enchanter's hideout.

Martin Gavinius

Have you come to kill me, Warrior?

Player

Don't worry, I'm not an assassin.

Martin Gavinius

Isn't it the Thalmor that sent you?

Player

Indeed, but I'm not one of them.

Player

There is a bigger threat than the Thalmor right now.

Player

I haven't decided yet.

Martin Gavinius

What is it that you want, then?

Player

I need the incantation for an ancient Ayleid Ritual.

Martin Gavinius

Then the rumors are true. Celemaril the Great has returned.

To tell you the truth, I wasn't sure if that story was fact or legend...but I guess we have the answer now.

Player

Can you help us?

Martin Gavinius

If it really is Celemaril, then it'd be foolish *not* to help you. He'll destroy Tamriel if given the chance.

Unfortunately, I do not have the incantation. It was lost when Celemaril's brother passed away.

Player

Valentis? I have met his ghost...

Martin Gavinius

Interesting...you can probably get the ritual from him. Here, this will help.

It's an amulet that will let you talk with him. It's the best I can do.

So, you will let me live, then?

Player

Sure.

Martin Gavinius

May Talos guide you on your quest, kind stranger.

Player

Sorry, I can't do that.

Martin Gavinius

B-but you said you weren't a murderer!

Player

The two fight, and Gavinius is defeated.

Player

Equipped with the amulet to talk to the ghost to obtain the incantation, the Blade returns to town.

Thalmor Agent

Thank you for taking care of that old enchanter for me.

I trust you were able to get what you needed from him?

Player

I was.

Thalmor Agent

Good. I knew I could count on someone like you for this.

The Ghost's Tale

Wasting no time, the Blade decided to use what they'd learned from the enchanter to speak with the ghost of Valentis. They headed down into the crypts beneath the town, fought the usual undead, and found the ghost in the burial chamber.

The Ghost of Valentis

Hear us, mortal, for we speak from beyond the veil of death.

Player

I'm listening.

The Ghost of Valentis

The dark enemy draws ever stronger with each passing day. Soon, he will be restored to his full potential.

Player

Speak, brother of Celemaril.

The Ghost of Valentis

Do not utter that cursed name in my presence! My brother died when the Sorcerer-King was born.

Player

Shulkunaak told me how to defeat him.

The Ghost of Valentis

The dragon did not tell you everything. After defeating his physical form, it is not enough to simply utter the incantation.

You must also place the Elder Scroll within a marble statue, enchanted by five Varla Stones set in its base.

Only then will the ritual be effective, and the Sorcerer-king imprisoned.

Player

I understand.

The Ghost of Valentis

Here is the incantation. May the Divines guide you.

Player

Thank you, noble spirit. We will not fail you.

They headed back to town to tell Saashi about what they had learned.

Saashi

[Player Name], you are back! This one is so relieved!

You found the ritual incantation, yes?

Player

That, and more.

Saashi

Oh? Do tell, please!

Player

We must rebuild the Founder's statue.

Saashi

Let Saashi guess: we must put the Elder Scroll inside, yes?

Player

That, and five Varla Stones.

Saashi

This will be no easy task, Varla stones are quite rare!

Ah, no matter. [Player Name] can do it, Saashi is sure of it!

You should go talk to Junius, he'll want to know about rebuilding the Founder's statue...

In any case, we do not know where to look. Maybe the Bloodfall Queen got something out of that death mage?

The Founder's Statue

Before finding the stones, the Blade wanted to rebuild the statue to house them. They spoke to the town elder to see if he had any information about what the statue used to look like.

Junius the Elder

So I understand we'll need to rebuild the statue in the town square. I have an old scale model to use as a reference.

Finding all the marble we'll need in the construction, that'll be the hard part.

Player

The Blade had saved up all the Marble, Crystal, and Bronze they found on their previous adventures. After a little more questing, they had enough materials to construct the statue, and headed to the Workshop where it was expertly remade.

Player

With the town's help, the statue was placed back where it belonged, right in front of the town hall.

Founder's Statue

The statue of the town's original founder, an Ayleid prince from the First Era.

Junius the Elder

It's... It's amazing. The statue looks better than it ever did.

Now we'll just have to hope it will work when the time finally comes.

You know where the stones are. All you need to do now is get them back.

The Five Stones

The Varla stones were something of a mystery. The Bloodfall Queen's emissary, Wanum, seemed as good a lead as any, so the Blade headed right for him. Luckly, the Argonian did have information.

Wanum

Good news, Warrior. The Queen sends word that the death mage finally broke and told us everything.

The necromancers' hideout is a desecrated shrine to Mara, out near Valenwood. That's where they're keeping the Varla Stones.

Player

Valenwood was a long way away, but the Blade had no choice. After a lot of trekking and quite a bit of fighting, they encountered two Bosmer.

Belegond

Halt, traveler. You are entering the territory of the Valenwood, and must submit to our authority.

What brings you to our realm?

Player

I seek the lost shrine of Mara.

Belegond

We know the shrine you speak of, but someone has already taken refuge there.

Player

Necromancers?

Belegond

Aye, we believe that is the case. We did not question them, only warned them that the shrine is guarded.

They earned the right to enter through a trial by combat. It was most impressive.

Player

I need to go there too.

Player

I'm still going.

Player

I seek to thwart the plans of death mages.

Belegond

We know of whom you speak. They came here desiring to use the abandoned shrine of Mara as a refuge.

We do not refuse sanctuary, even to necromancers. We simply warned them that they would need to face the shrine's guardians.

They did, and therefore they were allowed to stay.

Player

I need to go there too.

Belegond

We will not prevent passage there, but know that the shrine's guardians aren't as accommodating.

Player

Thanks for the heads-up.

Belegond

Was there something else you needed?

Player

How long have these death mages been here?

Belegond

A few months now. Over the past few months, the numbers have grown.

Player

What are the shrine's guardians?

Belegond

The forest itself decides which guardian each intruder will face. Only the strong of heart will prevail.

Player

Where is your village?

Belegond

It is well-hidden from view. Perhaps one day we will allow you to see it, but not today.

Player

The Blade ended the conversation. They had learned enough.

Belegond

May the Green guide your steps.

Player

Before moving on into the forest's depths, they spoke to the lady wood elf beside Belegond. Each time they initiated conversation, she had a different thing to say.

Aerwaen

Worry not–for if you fail, your body and soul will nourish the sacred trees.

The forest bears life, and the forest grants death.

I care not for necromancers, but the forest seems to have accepted them.

Strong or weak, wise or foolish. In the end, it is the forest that decides your fate.

It is not our place to question things. The forest protects us, just as we protect the forest.

Player

Satisfied, the Blade made their way into the wood. They fought off a variety of powerful enemies such as whisps and spriggans, and found each of the four elemental varla stones resting on pedestals in between three menhirs. The final stone, the Varla Stone of Light, was found in the hands of a statue of Mara, surrounded by ancient Ayleid pillars. The Blade grabbed it and headed back to town.

Saashi

Excellent! You brought back the Varla Stones!

Player

It wasn't easy.

Saashi

That is why you are a hero, my friend!

This one thinks we have found all we need...

Wrath of the Sorcerer-King

Player

With the crown and ritual in hand, and the statue built, all that was left was to place the Varla stones in its base. The Blade did so, completing the process. Next, they waited a bit and returned to Saashi.

Saashi

[Player Name]! It is happening! The Sorcerer-King is coming!

Hordes of undead are amassing near the Arena north of town!

Saashi will be ready to begin the ritual as soon as you defeat the Sorcerer-King!

Player

It's on!

Saashi

Send those demons back to Oblivion, [Player Name]!

Player

I need to prepare first.

Saashi

Better hurry then!

Player

The Blade checked their equipment and headed to the arena for their final showdown.

The Sorcerer King

You cannot stop me, [Player Name]...

I will reign once again, and the world will be set aflame!

Your loved ones will die, your cities will fall to dust...

And I will feast upon your soul!

Player

A long and difficult fight ensued, with the Blade coming close to death several times. Finally, they strike the fatal blow and the Lich withers and dies. The Blade, victorious, heads back to town to talk with Saashi.

Saashi

We did it! The Sorcerer-King has been defeated and bound, for a couple more millennia at least!

And then... He will be someone else's problem. Let future heroes deal with it!

I think we have earned the right to rest a little, don't you think?

Player

Depending on which quests the player has completed, they can either agree to rest or remind Saashi about the other problems facing the town.

Player

Those Thalmor are still nosing around town.

Saashi

Do you think they found out about you?

Player

Probably not, only you and Henrik know.

Saashi

Well, let us hope they leave soon...

Player

We still have goblins to worry about.

Saashi

They are a nuisance, true, but we do not really have to worry much about them. Right?

Player

I suppose so.

Saashi

Come, now. There will *always* be goblins to worry about. Wipe them out, and still they would return...

Player

We have to help rid the area of the Greencaps.

Saashi

Yes... What would our glorious queen do without her champion, Saashi wonders...

Player

I suppose so.

Saashi

Glad to hear you say it!

Saashi

You know, perhaps one day in the future another loremaster will read of our adventures, yes?

This one feels happy just thinking about it.

Player

And, just like that, the world was saved for a little while longer. The Blade was now free to deal with their other troubles.
