It can sometimes take time to write up a full, detailed post about the situation you want to describe, so would it make any sense, when you have an idea for an update, to post a simple message saying something to effect of "Please Hold" until you're ready to edit it into an actual response? Then you'd be able to write a proper update without having to worry about another player ninja'ing the point in time you were aiming for.

Sounds like a pretty good idea, Bibliophael. Let's do that.

Okay, don't worry if the thread slows down or becomes less interesting -that's why you have a DM and I'll help you move forward in such situations. I'll create a local guide character today. His use will be to lead you to the Crypt and help you go forward, that's all, so I will be able to manage both him (her? I usually play with women because I am one, lol) and other NPCs.

And no questions are stupid. We have this thread to talk about the game.

Also, I see we have more D&D players than just me, so I'll tell you one more thing. On the TIL forums we usually do the more "storytelling" version of RPG, as I've noticed. It means it's played without dice. Personally, I prefer RPGs with dice but because of how we manage turns and the tradition of TIL RPing, I guess we are doing it without the dice. If you ever feel my judgment was unfair, for example you didn't kill something that you would obviously kill already, write here or PM me. It's better to resolve such things, because RPG is for fun.

For reference, Therence wears light chain mail under a long cloth tunic and a dirty traveling cloak. The only weapon he carries is a chipped glass bow, slung across his back.

If we're describing characters, I'll mention that Omekh is in his early thirties, lying somewhere between lithe and strapping; he has to be deft of foot, as he's a swordsman first and a marksman second--he wields a scimitar at his hip and a crossbow at his upper back, over a worn black cloak. He's mostly decked in weathered leather, in a studded jerkin that may have once been ornate, along with leather handwraps and grieves over slim Turkish trousers. Bearded with long-ish dreaded hair tied behind his head.

On a side note, how am I doing? I know I'm only three posts in, but I wonder if I've done anything you wish I hadn't, or am not doing something you wish I would. I hope I've not been presumptuous in any way.

Btw Bibliophael, please keep ragging on me it's hilarious

You're doing well. I especially appreciate your enthusiasm for character conflict. An RP is always better off with lots of it.

Although while we're building the lore around this famous crypt together, in the future we should defer to Lusty Dovahkiin in regards to the inhabitants of the Crypt. I don't know if she has a lich planned or not. If there is, best thing would be to get together (via PM) to work out your character's relationship with the lich (what they "stole," would they know you, etc) so your character arch plays out smoothly. If not, maybe one can be worked in, or some evidence of the lich's former presence might be found and clues on where they might have gone for your character to follow.

That is, if you haven't done so already.

Thank you! But that's Therence, not me. He strongly believes in the superiority of cunning and intellect over what he considers brute strength, and he's probably definitely a little bit racist toward Orcs, Nords, and Redguards.

Sure, you can PM me about anything. If the LIch has stolen anything from anyone or you've lost something but you don't know where it is, or you want a specific kind of reward for your character (might be useful if you want to continue with the same character to the future RPs! Then you'll continue with that reward)

Annnd of course I have some nice loot in my mind, so if you don't PM me you're up for some fat loot as well ;)

Fuck, sorry for holding the thread for so long. I got caught up in stuff last night and couldn't post until work ended today.

OKAY

Yaalon has forged both the seals to the documents (as he states) and the writ itself. The charter and identification letter are legitimate. Here's a little flow chart to help you determine if your character notices if the documents are forged.

If your character passes a requirement and has reason to be suspicious, upgrade "small chance" to "moderate chance." If they're not suspicious, it remains a small chance.

1. Have you worked for the Mage's Guild before?

-if Yes, you have a small chance at noticing the errors in the seal. Continue to #2.

-if No, you don't notice anything suspicious.

2. Have you worked for the Northpoint Mage's Guild before?

-if Yes, you have a small chance at noticing the signature of the Guild Hall Steward, Metina "Forktongue", is falsified. Continue to #3.

-if No, you don't notice the forged signature. Continue to #3.

3. If either #1 or #2 (or both) have made you suspect something, and you have magical talent, (and are aware of the practice, of course) you have a high chance at noticing that the Writ lacks an enchantment.

All official guild writs are enchanted with a weak spell by the Guild steward so that other mages, who are sensitive to magic, can verify a document's authenticity. It is not dissimilar to anti-counterfitting measures on paper currency. Widely known by Guild higher-ups or people with a long history of interacting with the Guild. Not known by many low-level members or more casual associates.

Anyway, the Writ basically states:

The bearer of this letter, Yaalon Wicksley, is hereby charged with the full authority of the Mage's Guild, as established under the Imperial Charter, to obtain, by any legal method at his disposal, the genealogical records that can be found within the archives of the Crypt of Hearts. Should this letter be found after the death of the carrier, please bear this letter to the nearest guild hall alongwith proof of the deceased identity... *additional legal mumbo-jumbo*

I was more hoping to make Yaalon uncomfortable, and maybe plant the seed for some character drama later on, than to actually expose him. I hadn't planned on allowing Therence to identify the forgery just yet, except maybe insofar as he'd have a moment of doubt before deciding that anything weird about this writ was just due to the Northpoint chapter doing things differently. He really wants to believe this is his ticket back into the Guild, so he's not as observant as he might be otherwise.

But he's done contract work for the Guild almost all his life, so I figure he must know about the practice of enchanting these writs. Hrmm.

How about this. Therence takes the letter and spends a few moments studying it, frowning. He's trying to come up with a legitimate justification for the missing enchantment. That might give one other character just enough time to offer a reply to Yaalon's last comment before he interrupts with his conclusions about why everything is perfectly fine.

Sounds like a plan. I suspected, given what I know about Therence so far, that he would probably overlook / explain away any initial suspicions given his enthusiasm to return to Guild work. So I'm banking on that for now. ;)

So I guess the scene has split into two conversations going on at once: one between Therence and Yaalon, and one between Omekh and Cayliss. That's fine, but it may require slightly more coordination backstage.

As Omekh speaks his latest words to Cayliss, Therence is waiting for a reply from Yaalon. Omekh is apparently ignoring or oblivious to any reaction Yaalon may or may not have had to Therence's latest words, and Therence is ignoring Omekh and Cayliss.

I absolutely meant to have Omekh note both Yaalon's insistence that he was legitimate and Therence's prolonged appraisal of the documents, and somehow managed to forget that entirely. I apologize, as I wrote the passage pretty late and was tired. I can edit the beginning of the post to add in what I originally meant, if you guys want.

There was also so much back and forth between Therence and Yaalon, with Omekh and later Cayliss bystanders to their conversations. It had been a while since I'd posted as there wasn't an opportunity for me to  bounce off of. Omekh's exposition went largely unacknowledged, which I thought was priceless coming from Therence, but it was altogether moved on from very quickly. I figured the exchange of Yaalon's deception and Therence's quiet desperation to believe it would be brief enough to bleed into Cayliss talking about the Crypt.

I apologize if I've made things more difficult. I'll rewrite if you guys want.

It's fine because you explained everything. I recommend writing when you are not too tired, because my experience is that it's better to wait more and write when you feel like it. I bet noone would mind. I don't need it rewritten, so it's up to you and others.

I think if there's something you want to include, you should feel free to rewrite. I don't think you should feel obligated to do so, though.

Sorry guys! Been sick the last three days.

I'll have Yaalon answer Therence in a side conversation, then catch up with the flow by listening to Cayliss' description about the crypt.

I'd also suggest that we wrap up the tavern scene sometime this week and get moving towards the Crypt. We'll have plenty of time to chat and build character along the way!

Yeah, you can discuss anything you need to before leaving, for example what to buy (food? torches?), and we will be ready to go.

Edit: I hope I'm not too cheap for a guide xD Cayliss just wants to see the place again, so a nice discount is ok, right? I guess guides would take more for a deadly dungeon.

I may be late, but have you got space for one more? I'd love to join the RP. If you do, how would I get started? I'm new to this.

You are welcome to join, VoxelMush. All you need to get started is an idea for a character and an idea of how to conduct yourself in an RP. I put some basic rules down on the 1st page of this thread. You can take cues by reading the RP so far, if you haven't already.

Otherwise, feel free to jump into the story where you find appropriate. We'll be meeting just outside town very shortly, so maybe you want to join us there. We have another player who will be joining us along our journey to the Crypt, so that may be something you want to consider also.

Haven't roleplayed or been involved in the Elder Scrolls lore community in a long time, want to jump back in straight away, and I have a character in mind. Still room?

Welcome, VoxelMush! It will be good to have another player. Could you describe Ervesa for us? Her features and her garb? It would help our characters respond to her in different ways. Looking forward to meeting her!

I hope you don't mind if I show you how Ervesa looks like with a screenshot from Morrowind - I'm terrible at describing facial features. Here she is.

The only thing I'd change is Ervesa's demeanor. She doesn't look friendly in the screenshot, so I'd say that, unlike in the screenshot, she has a friendly, kind and inviting demeanor. As you can see, she wears a Common Robe, in order to showcase an image of humility. A pouch on her right side is used to store potions and alchemical ingredients, stuff a healer would like to keep around.

Once again, I'm sorry if you would prefer a nice descriptive text, but describing faces is something I'm really not good at (my utter lack of skill when it comes to drawing faces is probably also related).

Oh, and thanks for the welcome Raga. :)

Any space to join? I actually wrote an introductory post a few days ago without realizing that I needed to be approved for posting by the forum admins. It just popped up on the first page of the roleplay today, haha.

I guess that we could take you, if noone objects. You can simply notice our group doing something while still being in town, or you can join later on the way -and in the case of joining later, send me a message so we can talk about it. I'm the Game Master who makes the story and encounters, so you know why we have to cooperate in that case.

On that note, I sent you a PM some time before you posted this. Have you received it?
